Thought I would pull an old thread from the grave.  If you haven't watched the video, take a look if you can stomach it.  It is knee-chattering video.

Then I saw this one posted this week from a guy in Romania. Nut free climbs an old smoke stack without any safety gear. Equally terrifying if you ask me.  Although the stack is only 918ft (280m), it looks really unsafe watching him climb the old chimney.

And then I found another smoke stack climber.....

Its as easy as 0, 1, 1, 2, 3
Imagine being at the top of that tower, and you suddenly get a bad stomach ache from that taco you had earlier. Oh dear..

Just let it fly.

Palms starting sweating at :32. Closed the video at :54. Only 1:50 in length and I couldn't view it any longer. Heart still beating. FirstAscent is my first ignore (only kidding  Grin). Any more videos like that submitted and I'm closing this thread.  Roll Eyes

You missed the 1:10 mark. Give it another go.

Eat my toe tar!

Yes. Certainly. The first video link I posted, you'll need to be watching at the 2:06 mark. For your convenience, I have provided the youtube link right at the 2:06 mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=tlIQzWnxOLI#t=125s

I remember watching that video a couple of years ago and it made me very uneasy. What he's doing is class 4 climbing, but with extreme exposure. Exposure doesn't just mean height. Exposure means all the open air around you. In this guy's case, he has open air underneath him, to both sides, and even in front of him. Imagine climbing inside a vertical chimney. Air is underneath you, but not all around you. Climb a vertical face, and you don't have all that air to both sides or in front of you. However, the vertical face is like something pushing you out, which can be scary. Climbing a vertical arete (an outside corner) offers more exposure.

He's free solo climbing class 4 though, which means vertical and as difficult as climbing a ladder. It means that technically, any reasonably physically fit person can do it. Class 5 climbing requires special knowledge of how to hold on to the climbing surface, where one employs special techniques, such as smearing, toe jams, foot jams, finger jams, fist jams, liebacks, stemming, crimping, underclings, and edging. Regarding edging, imagine gluing a silver dollar to a wall and using the edge of the coin to stand on 1,000 feet up.

You better not get in bed with a real fat girl... Might get nauseous from the climb Smiley

Fat girls are great! Warmth in the winter and shade in the summer.

I would have no problem getting into a balloon or going out onto the skywalk, but viewing videos of it being done freaks me out.

I can not stand on the very top of a single scaffold, but have no problem standing on an eight inch board six scaffolds high, provided I have one brace locked in in front of me. The bottom line, I guess it's all about security and trust. (just realized what I penned--not planned)

Just watching that invoked a primitive fear response. Creepy.

Friends dad was offered 100k a year to climb towers.
Estimate around that in America.

The revolution will be monetized!
Would you not be tied to your partner?
Don't tie that nut to me! lol

But seriously, your partner is one of the few things up there not bolted down. You would want to clip into the structure. Kinda like grabbing the rope while rock climbing. It feels natural, but the rope moves around while the rock is solidly in place.

Away on an extended break
With the proper gear and training I would tackle climbing that tower for pay.... No problem.. I would even do the crazy skyscraper windows.

I'll need much more than the paltry hook they were using. Heck, I still have vivid visions where the hook slipped off the bar and the video showing some projectile motion off the tower.  Lips sealed
