If you look at the actual listing, the bit about cryptocurrency seems minor. The job requires knowledge and experience with Deep Learning and Internet of Things. Experience with blockchains isn't required, just a plus. It's probably like the author speculated:

It could also just be a way to signal to potential applicants that it is looking for people that really love to dive into deep technological and mathematical concepts.

NASA might be building a permissioned blockchain for air traffic management, but I don't see why that would call for a data scientists.

Despite how I earnestly want to always read positive news and reviews about Bitcoin, l honestly don't know how launching Bitcoin in the moon will change anything. Let more awareness around Bitcoin be created here on planet earth first before we start going to space. We need more countries to adopt Bitcoin and not inanimate moon.

I am still trying to look at the correlation between NASA using blockchain as technology for the NASA and bitcoin as cryptocurrency. I know that when it comes to data of NASA, they can use blockchain technology but bitcoin is a currency which is meant to be spent r held as asset to appreciate, and I don't know how the use of bitcoin in the space can work because there is no habitant there.

Nasa wanted to grasp more ground in terms of fund source.  I think they wanted to get the support of those Bitcoin whales to fund their upcoming project and one of the best method is involving Bitcoin into their project.  They could just create their own cyrptocurrency if they just wanted to test things out.  It is far easier to them since they have full control of everything and they have the capable people to handle it but as I say, more fund source is better.

When it comes to awareness of the public for cryptocurrency, how is it possible for them to create awareness with it, this news to me is really nothing that I think can actually have any much effect on the value of bitcoin or increase the adoption rate of the coin, but we can never say anyway, until something of such happen and we see it, maybe I will be convinced.

NASA is well known and any tech people will definitely know them and will handle what they stated with high regards, same thing with advertising Bitcoin in their plans.  Just think of how many people had Bitcoin reached in these announcement of NASA?  Definitely it is hundreds of millions or more.  And possibly those who are half-hearted about Bitcoin will have a second thought since NASA is planning to utilize it.

Blockchain technology is very different to Bitcoin, when companies are talking about it, because they look at the underlying technology that they can utilize to secure data, because it is basically immutable. They might implement it in their Supply chain to track components and parts or to store data in a more secure manner.

It would be great if they used the Bitcoin token, but I seriously doubt that.  Roll Eyes  We might just see the first MarsCoin in the future, if NASA are looking at a payment system for the Mars colonization projects.  Wink

They are looking for someone or people who understand how blockchain works to join research and development facility Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the article clearly mention what will they do;
the Data Scientist will develop applications for different areas of JPL including robotics, artificial intelligence, multi-mission systems, mission assurance, cloud computing,......
‌The thing about NASA to launch Bitcoin to the moon, creating a cryptocurrency for Mars payment, even create a colony on Mars are completely fun speculation.

I'd love to see someone (if there is one in this forum which is included) that is a member would explain on what will be their plans when it reaches onto the moon, this is a great milestone for Bitcoin because it also attracts other people and will make them know that BTC is indeed having a continuous uprise!

The space agency is now looking for a new Data Scientist to join the JPL team and has a surprising point on the list of qualifications for the role. The wanted ad states: "Experience with cryptocurrency and Blockchain is considered a plus."

There is no explanation given as to why experience with cryptocurrency is beneficial for the work at JPL but you can have fun speculating. Maybe NASA is looking for ways to develop a new economy for an independent Mars colony, launch an ICO to fund a moon base, or even find a way to trade with space aliens. Well this sounds like NASA might want to use blockchain. Unlike private entities, there is little reason for them to handle currency. Perhaps they are already planning a redundant and secure decentralized data base where you can add entries but not change the previous ones whatsoever (ie by corruption from cosmic radiation).

You know, SpaceX's Elon Musk does know about crypto and Bitcoin, and he does want to set up a transport business for Mars. I think in that company lies a higher chance for coin use than in a State organization. He can also do "eccentric" things, like sending his own car to Mars (fly-by). He is the type that could send a Bitcoin node to the Moon if he wanted to, if only for the joke...

But NASA? Hmm i don't think so, not a coin anyway.

Look at how many years it took to bring the blockchain into existence from the stuff that Alan Turing and his associates developed in WW2. It's pretty complex stuff. But now we are seeing that by combining blockchain ideas with the quantum computer and AI, that we are still in the very early stages of what might be accomplished with the blockchain.

Here is a simple application. In all computer programming in our standard computers, there are times when the use of the same characters in the programming is misinterpreted by certain parts of the program. The computer does things differently than what is expected of it. Even Windows 10 freezes the computer on occasion.

Blockchain encryption of various aspects of programming will make sure the program is always read right, and the computer always does what is expected of it. Why? Because there will be no way for the computer to misapply an encrypted computer code.

Normally this would mean complex operations in computers that would make the computer to be too slow to do things in a timely manner. But quantum computers are so extremely fast, that once they become efficient, they will be able to use the blockchain with no loss of speed... in a timely manner that other computers can't duplicate. We will eliminate programming errors with the blockchain.

Haha, NASA took it seriously and they really are going to bring bitcoin to the moon! As blockchain is use to attached to bitcoin most of the time but NASA I think is more serious about blockchain development. As the article said, we can all have fun and speculate about the real score of NASA.
Same thought that came to my mind, an ICO that will fund another exploration, space station and discovery.  Cheesy

I guess they are preparing the wonders of vast space to be the center for making a miner that will use the vast space and time to mine for Bitcoin, the unlimited capacity and imagine free internet to be powered by energy in space, I just heard a quite pointers on what may happen  in their exploration, but their main focus is cryptocurrency.

Well, even though I have experience with cryptocurrency and Blockchain I'd rather stay on earth and be on the comfort of my home, I do not really suit in extreme weather condition on space in my opinion, but this kind of project makes me thrill in what can they really been up to.

it has nothing to do with intergalatic currencies

big data in space doesnt work, everyone knows data relay from mars to earth isnt instant, between 4-24 minutes depending on the orbits around the sun the planets have.
and having 10,000 systems onboard just aint possible. so having to send short databursts, have earth process it quickly so the satalite can be commanded to move on to the next section

its for things like once data is collected back on earth, then mining it. imagine instead of one super computer reading a data file and looking for a certain piece of data like GHJK but they dont know that what they are looking for begins with G yet. they can have the file distributed across many computers across the world and all the computers are set to have one computer start at A another start at B and so on looking for HJK. where obviously the G computer will be the winner this time but do it real fast rather than it have one system start with a,b,c,d,e,f,g,

same to mining crypto.(simplified for demo, dont knitpick)
 instead of searching huge numbers where using one system starts at 000000000000000000000001
which would get to 000000005000000000000001 after the first second using a 50terrahash miner
which would get to 000003000000000000000001 after 10 minutes using a 50terrahash miner

by having another asic
000010000000000000000001 to 000013000000000000000001
000020000000000000000001 to 000023000000000000000001
and so on. the entire set of possibilities of that range can be searched in 10 minutes using 10,000 asics
rather than 1 system taking 100k minutes (~70 days)

imagine it like having telescopes that photograph the vastness of space, looking for a certain red hue that indicates a red dwarf. do you want a telescope taking a HD image and spending 70 days reading the data looking for a RGB datacode for the red in the vastless of datacodes of black and white bfore it gets to move position to the next grid, or send the data to earth let 10,000+ systems churn through the data in minutes and be able to command the telescope at what location to concentrate on within the hour

If actually NASA did that then it would mean the world to everyone who is right now fighting wars against the government for banning it .
Maybe they will change their mind or the news is fake but that if happened will push the mentality and it would be so amazing to have such a great company supporting Bitcoins..but we should understand that they need blockchain technology to actually get their softwares on track therefore I think it will be more or so blockchain ..not Bitcoin itself.

I think NASA would more be interested in blockchain technology than in Bitcoin itself. The fact that they are looking to hire cryptocurrencies experts doesn't necessary mean they will deal with Bitcoin itself although it's very possible. Anyway it's good promotion for cryptocurrencies in general that such respective angency is looking for experts on that field.

Well, we certainly will need a transaction system between planets because the cost of transfering paper money from Earth to other planets will be very high. Surely, this is for the far future but it will be. On the other hand, this system may be centralized. Human kind needs to evolve until we get a decentralized system for all. I hope we will evolve soon though.

As Pab stated that people in moon is a utopia so as decentralized monetary system is.  With the presence of a governing body, a fully decentralized system will never be possible.  Let alone government always wanted to get involved in every peoples pocket or by any change they can get profit in mediating/regulating  transactions.  

Therefore, Trump will not ban Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Even before the end of his presidency, he had little left, so he would not do such harsh and stupid things.
As for NASA, they need specialists in various fields, including to protect their digital information. Most of their technical workers are not directly related to space.


Who knows, Trump's action is unpredictable, he can ban Bitcoin and let NASA adopt the technology within it.  There are several talented programmer in their rank or NASA can hire one, cloning Bitcoin is an easy task for them less the mining activities of course since for sure they wanted it centralized.

Well, we certainly will need a transaction system between planets because the cost of transfering paper money from Earth to other planets will be very high. Surely, this is for the far future but it will be. On the other hand, this system may be centralized. Human kind needs to evolve until we get a decentralized system for all. I hope we will evolve soon though.

It will be funny if Trump bans cryptocurrency at all in the US and all the efforts of NASA will be done in vain. Although I would like to hear an official statement about why the global corporation needs a person with experience in crypto and blockchain, not only assumptions

Maybe NASA are just seeking someone who knew how to develop blockchain integration to their space projects, space exploration is a very expensive project, if they need accounting to it, they would need automation and blockchain could help them with it. But they mention "cryptocurrency", don't you think this is related to Elon Musk Spacechain?
