I like CoinGecko, even though NXTs ratings there could be better...... Roll Eyes
But, hey, the one thing CG can't quantify is the most important thing : how well does the tech work ?

I think, btw, that NXTs low rating on Dev score is based on the fact that we have only recently put up a GitHub repo, previously we had everything on BitBucket.

Hi EvilDave, this is Bobby from CoinGecko. I just saw this comment. Has NXT moved their repo to Github? I can only find an unofficial mirror on Github while things still seem to be on Bitbucket. If NXT is planning to move to Github, do let me know by dropping me a PM or email at [email protected]. Thanks!

Agree with EvilDave. For longterm take the time to do some research! Lots of scams and clones in this cryptoworld. Just take the time and start reading!

On the OPs investment question: DYOR means do your own research, and you should do exactly that.
Take the time to figure out what is BS and what is real before you invest, a week or two waiting and researching won't make any real difference to your investment in the longterm, but it could save you from making an expensive mistake if you rush in now.

Having said that, BTC does look like a good buy right now, and NXT is always a good idea.

I'm not going to tell you to not buy Alts, but for the most part, they're all experimental proof of concept pump and dump coins at the moment.

http://coinmarketcap.com/

Only Bitcoin at the moment, has all the VC funding, the major developers, and major backers and support at the moment to truly survive.

But if you want to experiment with a few bucks with the Ripples, Litecoins, Paycoins, or NXT be my guest.

Market cap don't lie...

I have to agree that you should really do all the research you can before trading in any coins. Trade only with money you are prepared to lose. We all saw how volatile Bitcoin price is. Altcoins are 1000 times more volatile!

You should also look at www.coingecko.com in your research to get a more holistic evaluation of the coin by looking at developer activity, community support, trading volume etc.

Sorry but coingecko.com is a joke.
Developer score (activity on source repository) of Litecoin
is 89, and only 71 for Nxt

You have only one option: Bitcoin.

I'd advise you only invest in bitcoin for now (not more than you afford to lose), best to do a lot of research if you plan to invest in alts as a majority are just get-rich-quick schemes.

just buy bitcoin, and don't fall for big trap like "paycoin"

pahaha

Don't listen to the bitcoin nutcases. They lost everyone money who listened to them. Bitcoin is full of bagholders looking for the exit.
Look how scammy they tell people to buy their shitcoin during the most epic crash. Whatever you do: stay away from bitcoin - it is not a store of value, it's an inflationary currency. Only hold shortterm.

Altcoins are a minefield too. Needs to do good research - most is scam. Stick to the established alts that have shown to be capable to maintain some value.

If you want to buy cryptos, you should buy bitcoin. It has the largest market cap. If any crypto is going to succeed, it is going to be bitcoin. Investing in altcoin is not for newbies.

You miss something.
Bitcoin has the biggest market cap and will most likely grow further, thats right.
But there will be the time, bitcoin gets unthroned of other cryptos. Probably not 2015, you don't know when, but it will be for sure, because bitcoin is not made for the future and its getting just "old" compared to others... (less features and speed, I always compare it with a 14400 Modem...)

So just think about the scenario, that you invest in an promising altcoin with a lower market cap, and if it overtakes:
If you invest in ripple, you get about 5 times profit, if it passes bitcoin.
If you invest in bitshares, you get about 100 times profit, if it passes bitcoin.
If you invest in nxt, you get about 200 times profit, if it passes bitcoin.
If you invest in supernet, you get about 1000 times profit, if it passes bitcoin.
If you invest in TileCoin, you get about 5000 times profit, if it passes bitcoin.

Ok the lower it is, the less likely it maybe gets, but still think about it. Lower marketcap can also mean opportunity ;-)

Lookup the price vs time charts of all or major altcoins (including new and waiting to be born)...take some time comparing them. You will find a certain pattern repeating. That will tell you which coins you can buy now to sell at a higher price later.

to someone new.  just hold your hard earned money for now.  all of crypto is in a slump right now and could go down some more.  just be in the sidelines and keep watching the market.  be patient, but be ready for some bargain hunting.  do not be in a rush to take a position, crypto ain't going anywhere.  and we do not want you bagholding...  Grin

Welcome to the forum. Do your own research about what you think are the right decisions for you.
\

Agreed. As you can obviously see, it isn't exactly obvious what will make you money and what won't. I, personally, think you should spend at least a few months researching and getting involved in the cryptocurrency community as a bystander before investing money. Also, many people think bitcoin could continue downward so don't fall into the trap that it is a sure money-maker.
