It is great bitcoin can have a movie. But the negative part is when the movie director will not have enough knowledge about bitcoin, when it happen do you think the movie can deliver a right message to the public? No! Bitcoin will become negative in the netizen's eyes when the movie delivered a wrong thought or information about bitcoin.

And what about all those movies where people steal money from banks and run away with bags of cash leaving behind clueless cops? How many times does something like that happen in the real life?

It's nice they made a movie about crypto because it will for sure raise public awareness. People who never knew a thing about crypto will research it and maybe even use it.
Curiosity would really be there when viewers do able to see some new things that they havent encountered yet into their entire life.It will depend on the movie on how they do interpret bitcoin
but to be expected when we do talk about hollywood movies then for sure there would be some revised things.

Now almost in every film and series that I come across, there is a mention of cryptocurrency, in particular, bitcoin. And this is an entertainment show, not a documentary. And most often it's precisely on such entertainme nt, and not necessarily exact from a technical point of view, films that people go to. I think it’s good that the bitcoin theme is constantly rising and going to the masses.

"It can be said that any publicity is good publicity for the world’s largest cryptocurrency and the entire industry in general, that’s true. In reality though, building the story of the film around a stale and over-worn trope thats been the go-to talking point for media since the inception of cryptocurrency, displays exactly how broken the idea of what Bitcoin is within the general public today."

we do not need this for more people to enter the world  of bitcoin, there is already exist big community around bitcoin and with this great community that bitcoin has, and it is possible to tell more people about bitcoin and maybe many new people join this great community that Bitcoin has. A movie about bitcoin can hardly come out any good for bitcoin. bitcoin has an anonymous creator, that's enough to know that a movie about bitcoin will not work out good

Misguidedness? Who cares? People go to the movies to have fun, not to watch a highly detailed and accurate representation of a theme, in this case, cryptocurrencies.

I don't expect much from this movie, especially coming from Hollywood. It might end up like one of those shitty "hacker" movies where they try to make everything flashy and whatnot but the final result is a complete trainwreck completely different from reality.

But I'd prefer a series rather than a movie about cryptos. I hope that one day, Sam Esmail, the creator of Mr. Robot (if you haven't watched this series, do yourself a favor and go watch it, now!), decides to make a cryptocurrency series, I think it could be as good as Mr Robot.

Why would anyone want to watch a technically correct film about crypto? Crypto is no more than a platform to extract drama just the same as anything else.

No one cares about an accurate portrayal. They want exploding tits, a glans the size of a grapefruit smeared all over the lens and cars that get horny.

Isn't the first thing mentioned a documentary? - I believe that it is.

In movies they care about pleasing their targeted audience, which wants excitement. I personally never feel excitement for movies, i either laugh or learn from some things. Since truth sometimes can be hidden in the simplest things.

That's how it is and that's how it will be. Later when mass adoption comes then sure the excitement could be for other things, but will they fully drop the crime part? I don't think so.

Hollywood is made to entertain not to educate. It is made to inspire and to tickle the imagination. A Hollywood movie about bitcoin will do if you just want to inspire the young minds to take a look in bitcoin and its technology. If anyone wants a true status of bitcoin, a documentary is the nearest to a movie.

I would.

Go and make it and see what happens. Most people want to take their brains out. I don't think audiences are dumb, but they don't want to stretch themselves most of the time and Hollywood needs to appeal to Libyan cab drivers just as much as some tech bro.

I presume there are a few people out there making something with more respect for the subject. I'm not sure it'll ever be distributed well enough to get anywhere.

I would. I liked how "Silicon Valley" briefly touched the topic of cryptocurrencies and ICOs, and I guess it would be nice to see a movie or series about business and tech that dwell on the topic more. Not something where cryptos are used by mafia to launder money, but where people are exploring the potential of cryptocurrencies, dev teams are arguing about the future direction, startups fight for best utilising the tech etc. I'd definitely prefer this kind of a story over a shitty Hollywood action movie. And I'm sure there are others like me. I think the audience is not really as dumb as people who make these kind of movies think it is. I bet the movie will fail in terms of box-office, so no huge damage to cryptos will be done.

I definitely would too, and a good number of people in the tech industry in general for sure. The thing is though, is that they're most likely catering to the masses, not to the more technically literate people; so I really wouldn't call this "misguided", as like I said in a previous reply, I really don't think being historically accurate is the goal, but to put on a drama show for the masses to enjoy.

Hollywood will never be able to profit off of a technically correct cryptocurrency movie, since that is simply not what appeals to the public. The public wants crypto to be evil, because it is the investment opportunity they never had, and it is the new technology they believe they will never understand. Give it 20 years. As the current youth shifts into the Hollywood industry and the technologically illiterate phase out, this "crypto... bad!" mindset will disappear as well.

Movies are mostly fictions and imaginations brought to life especially that of the Hollywood.
I would prefer to see a documentary where facts and figures are well detailed and not made to excite the audience and gain big box office as that of an Hollywood movie.

*snip*

Yeah pretty much this. I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think the intentions of the movie writers/directors/etc is to have a historically accurate movie in the first place; but something of "drama" and something that would entertain the audience. It's just that one of the main elements of the movie is cryptocurrencies, and that's pretty much it.

Yeah guys, come on. It's a film. Entertainment. I enjoy myself thoroughly suspending my beliefs for movies like Raid Redemption where a guy can go on fighting unarmed scene after scene, surviving injuries that would have killed me a hundred times over.

I'm sure we can try and forgive Crypto for making this a blockbuster of tropes. Who wants to see pale people sharing code in mailing lists and experts knocking it out on forums for bragging rights on most shared views?

Favourite trailer scene from crypto: the compliance officer finding folder labelled "Kickbacks".

I do prefer my tits unexploded though.

Catchy title: check.
A storyline feeding into the public's pre-existing bias: check.

As I was saying in the other topic:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5120120.20

Isn't it a bit biased to also say that every studio in the US  is "Hollywood"? Even if they are based in NYC?

Why would anyone want to watch a technically correct anything?
A week ago I took a pothole at 50kmh, tore the tire, busted the rim, and made a mess of thing I don't know their names even in my native language. But would I watch a car chase like that or at 6kmh during rush hour?
Let's watch a real crypto movie, like me banging my head against the desk for choosing coingate and their 6 confirmation for one and half hour Tongue

And let's be honest, tell me you're going to ignore a movie that has exploding tits on the cover

Sadly, the movies that will come out will simply be a function of what the public wants.

Catchy title: check.
A storyline feeding into the public's pre-existing bias: check.

Money laundering, bitcoin, terrorism, all of those ideas are wrapped up in the minds of the public, and when you say "crypto" or "bitcoin", that's what the public jumps to first. It's an easy target and it's been that way for quite a while. Of course, us crypto veterans, or hell, even people who have done the bare minimum research into what bitcoin is will understand that cryptocurrencies go far beyond just money laundering.

Naturally, since cryptocurrencies are still in their infancy in terms of adoption, Hollywood will never be able to profit off of a technically correct cryptocurrency movie, since that is simply not what appeals to the public. The public wants crypto to be evil, because it is the investment opportunity they never had, and it is the new technology they believe they will never understand. Give it 20 years. Hollywood gets everything wrong. If you investigate virtually everything they do on screen, when it comes to the real thing there's basically no resemblance. Think of all the stupid things guns do in films that they don't in real life - infinite magazines, silencers that are actually silent.

If it inspires a few kiddiwinkles to look deeper and learn some actual facts then that's a win.
