I was sitting and talking with my gold buyer and a friend of his the other day.  I have never met this friend of his before.  So, long story shorter, I get into a discussion with this 72 year old about what Bitcoin is.  His friend jumps into the mix and tries to convince me that there are governments across the world working together to come up with a new form of Bitcoin which will be controlled by the governments.  According to him, this will wipe out the current form of Bitcoin and the government will be in complete control.  I think this guy is full of S*** personally.  If the government would do this, they would be accepting something they are trying to stop and that is the collapse of the banking system where there are more fees than transactions in any given day.  I do not see the governments working together to do this.  Any opinions on this?

I think the guy doesn't have a single clue what he's talking about to be honest bro. He probably read about it in some crappy newspaper or online article & took it as gospel.

A government controlled coin or blockchain is basically what exists now, FIAT. He's talking shit.

If the government creates their own version of bitcoin then it will die.
Nobody will use it expect the politicians and even they won't like to use it but they will have too in order too show support for their own government. Cheesy
you are right, people would just not want to use it and thats it, it would be nice as they would spend so much money on it and no one would be using it Cheesy
maybe they can force us. if you have to pay the authorities and you taxes only in this GovCoin then people will start using it. aslo if you make a good marketing people will see that it's better than fiat and since they don't know bitcoin they won't know that there is something better.

It's not entirely incorrect if you replace all "Bitcoin" words in your post with "Cryptocurrency".  Some governments have already hinted that they wanted to make centralized cryptocurrencies.
But the part about how they're going to replace bitcoin is just BS.
Exactly, apples and oranges.
You can create your own crypto-currency and then what? Nada, nothing, null. Its just one more database in a world with hundreds of millions databases Wink. If you know smth about computer world, you just know that bitcoin is revolution and any other crypto is just nonsense.

Just for you all to know, the top banks in the world have agreed to release their own altcoin in 2018 which will be used among themselves. I have a feeling the coin will be introduced to the masses with time.

Re the first part, there's Settlement coin on the cards for sure, but that's hardly global agreement and it's commercially driven not governmental.
Re the second part, as you say, that's your 'feeling'.

Government version of Bitcoin? How does that work?
Government=centralized.
Bitcoin=decentralized.

Another conspiracy theory? That is how it looks like to me. I don't beleive that governements are preparing something like this. They can't make agreement on more importnat things and not on Bitcoin. And I don't think they find Bitcoin such a threat that they would considering joint action.

What are your sources, and how reliable are they (if you didn't think this news up, of course)?

Aren't the Israeli government supposedly involved in the Zcash project?
I remember reading that Scipr lab have some involvement with government projects.

EDIT:
There is actually a thread about that here, unfortunately no one after the OP really posts much useful information.

There's two flaws in this story.

1) The guy obviously doesn't know how Bitcoin works. There's already a form of electronic currency backed by nothing, with issued paper wallets that represent value and controlled by governments. We call it fiat.

2) World governments can't cooperate with each other long enough to do it. It's the reason the European Monetary Union and the euro failed. If governments could work together there would already be a "one world currency".

Exactly. I really don't know how they would alter the code to make a cryptocurrency that's centralized but it sounds just awful.

'Dear Mr. Government man/banker sir,

I sent $1,000,000 in fiatcrypto to my electric bill company by mistake. Could you reverse that transaction?

Thanks a million,

Some old fart'

Nobody ever thinks that Bitcoin was merely an experiment or trial balloon.

A good engineer always does reliability/verification testing before he releases product.

Bitcoin even says all of it's client releases are beta.

So many of you assume that this product is a success.

You fail to realize that it went from decentralized to Wall St in 6 seconds flat.

If I was the engineer I would call that a failure and go back to prototyping.

The only problem around a centralized coin is that only countries should invest at them, why would us left freedom and loose once again our control and power over our money to go to a coin centralized, controled by countries. If they offer something along those coins maybe they can reach sucess, as it will advertised into media almost instant, bitcoin will keep with their support and it could be amazing to see countries promoting a crypto coin, making people be able to know about others coins as well. But this its pure rumors and  to this happen will take years, if really will happen.

+1 what he says ^^^

Seems like OP lucked into listening to a couple of old white men fantasizing about being in control of everything. Like they do.

I believe that government are already thinking or doing something so that they can have a share of the bitcoin ecosystem. Bitcoin is a threat for them so if they can't do something about it then they would create a cryptocurrency that they can control and may be convince people that this cryptocurrency should be the one they are using. As for bitcoin maybe they will create some conspiracy or something that will convince people especially those that do not really know the nature of it that it is something bad or shady so people will have doubts in using it.

Didn't they already try that by trying to blame bitcoin for Silk Road?

Why should people use a crypto controlled by governments? There are already fiats for that
Yeah there is not benefits and also we will experience taxes in bitcoin if government is there  and if it will happen in the future more hackers will come and destroy bitcoin instead before they can corrupt.
