Mac people always told me that Macs are virus proof.

That's what they get for using closed software

The future, with all the smart homes, can be very interesting. You screw in a light bulb and it hacks your door lock.

This is normal in tech industry if you make a good anti-virus, someone will make better virus, then a better anti-virus and so on.
but having a smart house would be a mistake.

"We use our research to help raise awareness of firmware attacks, and show customers that they need to hold their vendors accountable for better firmware security,” Kovah told Vice News.

so don't worry about it

What you will find is that malware checkers will adapt so that can detect infections even if device is infected. There are ways to do this. Safe will help with keeping critical data safe, assuming that we don't see every computer infected. But if that happened we are screwed anyhow

Smart homes are going to be interesting in the future one break or leak in the network and the escalation of privileges could be used to activate or disarm the security system lock doors, or acquire true stalkers (hacked into the house network and see what everyone does in there)

For now I kind of thought the name of the virus should be thunderstruck #1 but I might be alone on that one ha-ha AC/DC.
(Speaking of Apple theirs enough money to be made so mac's will be attacked more often in my opinion especially in the case of smart homes where it will be MS/Android/Apple etc.)

The problem with technology is that it can malfunction. It uses electricity so if you cut of its power source of batteries or whatever it is using you can do what you want. The old system is better for me. I think i will never install smart technology in my house, it has its benefits but it has its problems too, at least for now.
Actually it depends on our own perception, which the smart technology is just be useful for those people who really need them in their business or their work.

Hello there!
If a programmer can create it, a programmer can defend against it. Simple as that.

When some people invented new technology, then there is someone else who make a bad thing like virus to ruin that technology, and not long after that, there is a company that make the antivirus or shield product for that. Thats how business is working.

Such is the life on closed software. If you are using Bitcoin, im hoping you are using Linux as well. Why would you trust closed software to guard your coins? At least im hoping that you dont update from Win7 to Win10 which is surveillance central.

I find this really funny. I remember having a roommate and working in Advertising everyone told me that I needed to have an Apple computer. That was the only way to go. When I asked why their computer was so special and what it could do that might computer was incapable of handling, they usually drew up blank. The only thing that they could tell me was that Apples do not get viruses.

I have been waiting for when someone would come up with a virus for Apple computers. I knew it was just a matter of time. Just because Apple has a different configuration than other computers and cannot get the same viruses as my computer, does not mean that eventually someone would come up with a virus that only attacked Apple computers. Those who bought Apple just because of the virus part are stupid and I thought it was a bad decision.

I hate how Apple works and the cocky attitude that comes with these products. This makes me really happy that the only reason that someone might consider going with this kind of product is now out the door.

You and me both. Apple sucks big time. Their OSX is big, clunky, awkward, and slow.  Each incarnation is worse than the last.

Would be interesting to see an actual demonstration of this infection from laptop -> adaptor -> laptop and see how it can access your private keys of your bitcoin wallet etc.

Just put a condom over your ethernet cable before you plug it in. Problem solved.
Haha, this post made my day!

@TECSHARE, are u kidding or for real? Apple products can get viruses...

Read the OP-linked article. You'd need a condom over the whole ethernet adapter, actually:

Quote
Once activated, the malware would look out for any peripherals connected to the computer, such as an Ethernet adapter, which it would then infect. The worm could then spread to any other computer to which the adapter gets connected. Once connected, the worm writes malicious code to the firmware of the MacBook.

One way to randomly infect machines would be to sell infected Ethernet adapters on eBay, or infect them in a factory, Wired reported.

Also:

Quote
“It turns out almost all of the attacks we found on PCs are also applicable to Macs,” Kovah said at the time.

EDIT: added the following to the OP:

It's interesting that every time there's a new technology there are people who dedicate their skill, time and money to destroy it.
Can't say I'm sad. Never owned a single Apple product and never will. I might consider it if they start matching the prices of their competitors. Right now it's an obvious choice. You can buy the same gadget from Samsung, LG or Sony for less... Or you follow the trend and go with Apple just to show off.

I can't say I'm looking forward to a future where this is the norm. It's an Orwellian nightmare just waiting to happen. If it's connected to a computer or the internet it can be hacked. Most people will be oblivious to who and what is watching them through the webcams on their TV and microphones on their fridge etc.
