I just created a simple ticker which shows the current price in the title of a web page, so you can see it on the tabs of the browser.

Don't expect anything fancy, feel free to download the source code from the link and adapt it to you needs.

http://bitcoin-ticker.netii.net/

If you don't want to fill any form field you can just leave them empty. Or use this link for the ticker without any configuration: http://bitcoin-ticker.netii.net/ticker.php

that's awsome actually !

I added the big version to one of the desktops of my Nokia N900 with the help of the Oculo widget, now i can keep up with the prices of BTC on the go without having to manually go to a site Smiley

Hey, if you don't mind me asking...what exactly is the practical application of having an embeddable image of a custom currency amount?

What I mean is, if you just want to know a conversion rate, then there are nice web services for that. If you want to serve the point of this and embed the image, it isn't clear to whoever is viewing the image that you're converting, say, $100 USD into BTC, because the image doesn't specify the amount in itself. To the viewer, it's just an arbitrary number pulled from nowhere, right?

I'm not challenging the usefulness of the app, but I'm just wondering what people will be using it for, since it was requested and all.

I can think of one just off the top of my head.

Imagine a site that is taking donations in BTC but wants to display the USD value of the total donated.

eg. "Our donation goal is $1000 worth of BTC, and so far we have collected [insert image here] worth of BTC".

Great! I see that you are updating it! Grin

http://btcticker.appspot.com

Well I since I started it... BTW, I'll be off for a day or two, so no updates. After that I'll try to make the tickers more visually appealing.

Great job, vrotaru! It was only a matter of time before a better coder hijacked my thread. =P

But, how would you like for me to design some good background graphics for you? If you like my design, I'd happily hand it over, but I can also make whatever changes you see fit.

You know, I just have a background in server programming and I was curious to see just how hard it could be. Well, Google AppEngine is not exactly graphics friendly, so it turned out to be slightly harder that I was expecting.

And yes, yes, yes!! I'll definitively welcome your help with good background graphics and maybe currency symbols

PS. I have alsow fixed some problems with overflow and and attempt to display 1000000000000000000000000.00 btc gives http://btcticker.appspot.com/mtgox/1000000000000000000000000.00btc.png

No problem, while the figures I just used create a 'wrong' image, this actually creates a 500 internal server error:

I know it's just new, but here's some interesting ones:

100,000.00 btc: http://btcticker.appspot.com/mtgox/100000.00btc.png Great!
1,000,000.00 btc: http://btcticker.appspot.com/mtgox/1000000.00btc.png Not so great!
10,000,000.00 btc: http://btcticker.appspot.com/mtgox/10000000.00btc.png Horrible!

Thanks, for pointing it out. I haven't checked it with great inputs. I may have to adjust the number of displayed digits depending on number.

Anyway, I recommend this for euro: https://bitmarket.eu
and GPB: https://britcoin.co.uk

Fine, I'll add suport for euro and pound

I think that you can also add an easy interface for dummies.
Users will select the service that they prefer, the in-currency,out-currency and the value.
It should show/make the final url.

Good suggestion. May make Google happy too. Too a degree Wink

I have something which is more a "proof of concept", but have look here: http://btcticker.appspot.com/

1 BTC:
$130 :

I know it's just new, but here's some interesting ones:

100,000.00 btc: Great!
1,000,000.00 btc: Not so great!
10,000,000.00 btc: Horrible!

Edit:
21,000,000 btc: Humorous!

Edit 2: I see you've now fixed things so my post doesn't make sense any more Smiley

I'll have a look in the evening. Can you recommend a USD/EUR service?

Cool! Grin

This is great because it's possible to easy add dynamic prices on forums! ( it's just an example )

Great service!

Is it easy to add also euro and other markets?

Also the way I calculate the conversion rate using MtGox ticker is (buy + sell + 2*last) / 4. It looks about right to me, but I'm open to suggestions.

Can you also add something like this?
http://oneminuteslow.com/bitcoin/130usd?.png

It will show a dynamic image with the actual value of 130 USD in Bitcoin

Pretty good idea, but for what it is, I don't think it would be worth the difficulty for me. I'm not experienced with server-side programming, and the current ticker I designed is simply a desktop application that uploads an image to the server every ten minutes. So, adding such a feature, which interacts with client requests and all, would be another big project rather than a small feature addition.

Great idea.

Feature request: Add support for other currencies as well.

I'd like to add other currencies, and I've actually begun coding it. The one hurdle is the fact that MtGox provides their ticker information in USD (https://mtgox.com/code/ticker.php) and, as far as I know, not in any other currency. So, I have to look up the current exchange rates as well. But, I'm about 70% done with it, so I suppose I might as well finish it. Would you like to see anything besides EUR?

So it will be possible to do the same with these example:

http://oneminuteslow.com/bitcoin/20usd?.png
http://oneminuteslow.com/bitcoin/45.4usd?.png
