Why can't you guys respect other's privacy?
Most of us do respect it brother. Just created this thread out of curiosity to know ppl's opinion since that was fast.

I hope you realize that by posting such topics you are defeating the purpose of a username change.
I guess ppl didnt add his old name into their posts in this thread (while some recognized their mistake and edited it right after they mentioned) So shouldn't be an issue.

However, since we got the most answers to this thread already, I will lock this thread now!

I got the whole story missed because I couldn't see the old username maybe when next you could get screenshot for reference purpose only. But in other way round changing a username is not something very bad though this could a reason of not wanting their real identity to be revealed or maybe could for a purpose of branding.

I only know of one other person on here who got a name change recently as well. If you need to change your name you better have a good reason if you take it all the way to Theymos! In this case for anonymous purposes I can see it as a viable option as opposed to creating a new acct

If we think that this boy, who registered here with his real name, left traces on the Internet earlier, since it's hard to believe that this forum was his first trip, then there is a lot of information about him on many sites.
Photos and data, if not here, then in another place, will remain forever, and if his was scared by someone here, then he should take care of deleting his information as soon as possible, which may be in another place. Although, as Google warns, getting rid of your traces is very difficult.

Yeah, I was wondering whether Theymos would see that as a valid reason to change his name, and the sole reason I figured he might have a chance was Theymos's respect for privacy.  I assume (but don't know for sure) that Theymos wouldn't just grant a name change for any newbie who requested one, else he'd be inundated with PMs asking for them.  And who knows, maybe his inbox is blowing up daily.

Still, it took me a PM, a thread dedicated to my request, and over 2 years in order to have my username change granted....so yeah.

If I were to guess, is that it was a great privacy risk for this dude (it was literally his first and last name lol), while with most people they probably just want a 'better' username because they picked something like bob35321.

He didn't submit a preferred username to thymos; he simply stated that he would be fine with any random username as long as his real name was removed, and the admin fixed that up with some random letters, which I'm sure in the next 2-3 years when he becomes a more established member, he will request a name change because this is not something anyone can pronounce or remember while quoting.
He didn't exactly say that he would be fine with any random letters as he even gave a suggestion so they could have changed it to that rather than this "mxfwzzwizqbz" due the reason you mentioned in your post.

I don't care what you guys change it to, you can change it to Michael23913 or something like that but please I just want to remove my last name from my account. I don't want my full name on this thing lmao

I guess theymos chose the first option because he clearly stated that he wouldn't mind if the admin changed it to some random shit and that's exactly what thyemos did since he wanted to remain hidden from the previous username. No one will be comfortable with this bot-generated username, and I'm sure he'll request a name change sooner or later. This is one of the worst forum usernames I've ever seen. Grin

So a newbie account with just 7 activity points just got successfull in convincing the admin(s) (probably theymos) to change his username.
The main reason to change the username was his legal name was visible to others. So it seems like it is now clear that theymos started giving importance to ppl's privacy and anonymity whether the person is a brand new account or not.
Im really impressed (and a bit shocked as well) by this activity. This was the first newbie (atleast in my eyes) who successfully got a name change in this forum. Have anyone seen such a username change scenario before ? I even know that reputed members have to DM theymos again and again to get a name change after a long waiting time Smiley
I remember theymos mentioned queries and requests from forum members via PM and since this has convincing reason so theymos did it eventually when he just saw the request and that's it and forum treats everyone equally because rules apply to everyone from newbies to legendary anyway I can see a lot of members are requesting for name change in the recent days.

If you have a pretty good, privacy related reason for wanting your display name changed, theymos usually sees to it fairly quickly, regardless of rank.

There was a user last year or two, IIRC who used their email as their username. This put them at a huge privacy risk and necessitated theymos to change their username.

If you want a a change for some other reason besides privacy concern, byhat usually requires some type of recommendation.

It's interesting that Ninjastic website and loyce.club are still showing his old username, so maybe they should also update.
This is common mistakes people are making while registering accounts, second biggest mistake is using one single password for all accounts. so I hope mxfwzzwizqbz is not doing that as well Wink
I suggest using some good open source password managers (like KeePass) f you can't remember usernames and passwords.

I'm not surprised about change of username especially when the reason makes sense. He deserved it, and he really did make it in the end.

Now I just have to realize that all users will get special attention from the admin when they complain about their privacy even if they are newbie. Honestly, this is the first I've heard of but someone may have come across few others in the past. Before I was just worried that he wouldn't get it, but in fact I was wrong.

Once a man, twice a child!
I remember commenting on the kid's thread too and didn't expect theymos would grant his request. Again, theymos has proved that he's capable of surprises. He doesn't have to wait till April 1st to spring one on us. However, I still have my reservation concerning the kid's account. Despite this name change, there are people who are still going to tie this new one to him. The best thing would be for him to totally start afresh and abandon this one too.

Have anyone seen such a username change scenario before ?
There is one account with a similar issue like the user you shared but that account is at a Senior member rank. The account was inactive on the forum months or years but suddenly logged in and made that request. He even shared some information that he wanted to changed his username to avoid doxing risk (or something very closely to that). If his request is approved, he will abandon that account instantly too.

I recalled that a few hours after that request was raised, his voice was listened and when theymos was active on the forum, he approved that request. Solution is changing username to a random one like the newbie case above.

Yeah name change isn’t something that’s common here. It took The Sceptical Chymist a long time to get his name change despite his rank and contributions to the forum. If we are using that as the benchmark, I sincerely didn’t expect the newbie would get his request so fast or ever for that matter. It’s a shock especially when only a handful of persons have been able to get admin to change their username. The only thing that beats this is when Cryptovator changed his name twice in one year.

The privacy issue of this youngster using his real name to register is of great importance, hence there was a need to change his name. This user is just sixteen and seems to be showing commendable interest in Bitcoin, he needs to be encouraged. One of the features of a successful leader is the ability to groom successors, I think Theymos might be looking in this direction. His former nameee was wonderful, but this one, I am just speechless.

It's not really that much of an issue but someone probably scared him into a panic. There are lots of members names that are known here including theymos but a little known newbie is unlikely to be a target of someone, but I guess that can all change as time goes on and lead to potential doxing etc if he ruffles any feathers. Most of the younger generation tend to post everything online anyway. Anyone with a social media account will post more identifiable information than just a name. A name is usually the bare minimum they share along with a lot of other far more dangerous stuff.

Are you sure @theymos changed the username? If some members can help you to recover your account and others add you to them whitelist, maybe some accounts can change your username, especially since I remember that it is not a big problem as it was possible for all members at some point.

I wonder why there is no option to delete the account, especially for newbies.

Only admins can do it so it will have likely been either theymos or cyrus.

It's obviously a little bit different when there's privacy concerns with their name literally being their username.

Too much noise for nothing, as if changing the name is something that happens rarely, regardless of whether it is a Newbie or any other rank. The only thing that plays the biggest role in whether someone's request will be approved is whether someone is asking for it to protect their privacy or if they just want a new nickname because they don't like the old one.

Some members have been approved for a name change more than once and I don't think it was ever a problem as long as the reason for the change was justified.

This user has some privacy concerns and got attention from one of the admins. He successfully changed his username. This is the third time I saw a username get changed; The first one was someone TheCrypto.... whatever, and the 2nd one was The Pharmacist. It took a long time for The Pharmacist to get approved. Change of name is not something that is difficult and it doesn't require creating threads and making public complaints to the people concerned with genuine reasons and your username would be changed. Sceptical Chymist formerly known as The Pharmacist was using a public method and nothing happened. I believe when he sent a personal pm, not necessarily to theymos, may Cyprus got the name changed.
If there is no compelling reason(s) to change username, no one would ask for it. For the case of a newbie, it's even simpler because the user isn't popular yet and many wouldn't even notice there is a change of username.

For me, that would mean manually editing many files. I don't really feel like doing that, once something's on the internet, it can't be forgotten anyway. I've updated my complete List of all Bitcointalk usernames.

SMF software does not support that particular feature. You'd basically have to wipe them out of the database which is very complicated to do.

Yes, theymos changed his username.

It's really a bad idea to have an option to delete account in this forum, imagine many scammer trying to scam someone and if he's successful he can delete his account, so there's no trace anymore. There's a lot reasons why account deletion will cause a problem, so it's better to have transparency.

No need mentioning his former name lmao, anyway it's all over the internet.

But no, there are instances that an admin approve a change name request regardless the rank and the popularity of the user. When it comes to privacy reason, admin usually approve it it only takes 1-2 days on this one, but of course you still need a good explanation when doing such request.

If he was, I reckon theymos wouldn't change it to one that was made from someone mashing their hands on the keyboard.

Based on the way the user was behaving, it may even be a safe guess that he requested that username for the change. Or theymos just did something random in a hurry. Mashing the keyboard is also an efficient way to do it  Tongue

It was never possible for all users to change their username, you could only change username if you donated 50 Bitcoins to the forum, which would then make you a VIP member, but IIRC the forum no longer accepts such donation, meaning the only way you can change your forum username is to send a PM to Theymos and try to convince him to change your username.
