My advice would be to start making online connections via Twitter. Follow @bryceweiner and find the other people on Twitter he communicates with who are active in the bitcoin community. Also, if you ever have used Meetup.com, there are bitcoin meetups all over the place.

i recommend youtube videos

This one I find quite good:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lx9zgZCMqXE

It describes how bitcoin network works in a digastable way to an average person.

All I have to say is whatever you do on this forum, use reputable escrow like escrow.ms = that can insure you will not get scammed.

Also avoid all the people who mention not using escrow, or the reasons not to use one.

Most can be found on this forum, but I do understand that this forum is hard to navigate now due to spam.

Heres some check list:

-figure out which bitcoin wallet to get
-what are the current best methods of getting free bitcoin (if any)
-figure how to back up your wallet balance: common problem, people back up the wallet dat and cant upload the balance of a .dat file due to obvious reasons. (search this)

Theres more basics that you need to consider before anything.
