honestly, this number is very high and does not convince me that it is real data, perhaps the number of people who play is increasing in order to create a law that restricts gambling, in the case of an African country I would not be surprised that this data data were manipulated to fool people into thinking that there are a lot of people playing. I don't know how many people from Nigeria are on this thread but if there is anyone from Nigeria on this thread I would ask the following:

How many neighbors, friends and relatives play at a casino or buy a lottery ticket?

because if someone who lives in Nigeria can see that their neighbors are playing a gambling, can see that their relatives and friends are playing a gambling, then these data could be true. Now I also need to see how much money people spend on gambling, because I highly doubt they spend a lot of money on gambling. African governments are not honest and trustworthy, that's why every thing they say you need to see if there is another credible source that confirms what they are saying

It's worrying that so many people in Nigeria gamble. If they're addicted or trying to make money, it could be bad for them.
People in Nigeria don't earn a lot, but they spend a big amount on gambling. The government needs to control this to protect them. They could do campaigns to tell people that gambling can be dangerous.
This might help them make better choices and avoid problems. telling them understand the risks of gambling is important to keep them safe.

Besides educating people about the bad influence and effect of gambling on their lives the government should strengthen its economy so people in third-world countries will not rely on gambling for their hopes and their futures, here in our country so many people are hooked on the lottery because the economy is not good with very high inflation and low salary when the stakes are high, people queuing just to bet and get a shot on the big pot.

They are motivated to bet even if they are not daily bettors in the hope that they get a shot on the big pot, there are true stories one example is a guy betting for the first time and picking a random number to hit the jackpot.

There's nothing wrong with taking a chance by buying a ticket in the hope that, that one ticket is your key to financial freedom what is bad is buying a lot of tickets and putting all your hopes to the point that you have no more money for your family, family comes first before anything else.

I saw this news online I think a day before yesterday, and with all sincerity, I was shocked for a second or two, but recovered from the shock after giving some thought to what I read and also comparing it to what is currently happening around in the country.

To be honest, I personally think that many in the country have turned to betting and gambling as a means of survival, several young boys and girls are into sports betting today, even those that are under s-aged.

So yeah, many indeed have turned to gambling and betting, as a means of survival in Nigeria, but then, we actually can not tell if this is a good or bad thing, until we also see how much casino are paying out to Nigerian on a daily basis, just as you have said.

I won't doubt you on this one, because I have practically monitor this situation, people now see gambling Nigeria as a means is survival especially soccer, any little money the have, the see it as an opportunity to bet, I can sincerely tell you that, this has also in one way help Nigeria as a country, if not, there would have been a high issue in my dear country, people see gambling as a social activity, they play this in company of their friend instead of engaging in questionable behaviour they prefer gambling, in my state people that indulge in gambling are more than the ones that don't, so this gambling habit is seen as nothing in this country, almost all the bet companies are making a lot of money in Nigeria to be precise, because of it's citizens massive involvement in bet.
I was very surprised by the figures, but I don't believe that more than 20% of the Nigerian population is involved in gambling. It could be possible, but it's hard to believe that most of these people depend on gambling for their lives.

You can certainly confirm this, especially about people you know, but to be honest, relying on the proceeds of gambling is a mistake. Gambling never guarantees victory, in fact you will never win without luck even though you have done the analysis. Sports betting makes sense, but even if it were possible then relying on gambling is not the best solution for survival.

But based on the statement in the OP, they gamble daily, which means they have a means of earning, so they are able to gamble every day, which means they have something that they do to earn. I don't know, I don't want to judge, but based on the percentage, maybe they are the people that are reachable. Of course, even the Nigerian country has rich people, so I think they are the ones that can gamble every day. If not, then we are not sure how they have money to use for betting.

Even if the government raises a campaign or such, they can't stop people from gambling because the decision will depend on themselves. Unless the government bans gambling activities, that is the most effective way to stop people from gambling, but another problem will emerge: there will be a lot of illegal gambling cases. In short, we can't force them to stop gambling, but yes, we can do our part or the government's part by raising awareness.

That's totally alarming considering the total population of Nigeria 225,600,039 as of November 2, 2023 coming from the source below.

https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/nigeria-population/

So let's do the match, that's 65m/223m = that's 28% of population are into gambling. Well, I tell you, this pecentage is too high considering some of the 225m population are minors or kids, or women, which the rate of gamblers is really high. And here's another interesting numbeer from OP>

Quote
spending an average of $15 daily

And as per data below, it's minimum wage is.

Quote
39.289 USD/Month
https://take-profit.org/en/statistics/minimum-wages/nigeria/

So they are gambling more than what they earn? That's unbelievable.

       -  The minimum wage in the country of Nigeria is very small, let's say 40 dollars a month. It will be really difficult for you to survive if that is your only source of profit, especially if you are a middle-aged person. So I will not be surprised if most gamblers in Nigeria think that gambling is a source of income because of their scenario.

That means the government also has a lot of money coming in. If 28% of the human population there spent 15 dollars per day, that's quite a lot. If only most of the government officials in Nigeria were not corrupt, maybe at least the economy of Nigeria would be good.

Trying to make money through gambling is a risky choice, especially if you're already facing financial difficulties. It shouldn't be your main way to earn a living, as it's very uncertain. Many people have tried and most of them have not succeeded. While it's true that some people make money in gambling, especially in sports, they make up a very small percentage. You'd be lucky if you belong to that small group.

Teaching people about the risks of gambling is helpful, but with the current high rate of gambling, a stronger approach is needed. This could involve completely prohibiting gambling and blocking websites that offer gambling services from overseas, making it harder for people to access them.

I saw a comment on the article about the numbers not a viable thing and that there's a possibility that it's an inaccurate statistic since they came from the government which I think is a valid argument so hopefully there are other statistics that can at least back this up. Regarding the statistics though, if this is accurate then that's an alarming number because a population that's mostly gambling is likely a population that's experiencing high levels of poverty although that's just a conjecture, I do think that when more people are trying their luck with gambling, that can only mean that they're trying to find a way to get out of poverty in the quickest way possible which is gambling.

It remind me about this video on youtube, Gamblers Like Me: The Dark Side of Sports Betting from BBC Africa.
I was surprised when the first time seeing this video, bookies are opening their service such as a grocery store or a minimarket there.
Interesting story, here is the link if you want to watch it:

Wow, I need to watch documentaries again and these might be the best one to start my documentary binge. I didn't know that gambling was that thriving in Africa that they're building these kinds of establishments just for the purpose of catering to gamblers and make the gambling experience more convenient.

Despite the crisis and economic difficulties everywhere, I am sure that gambling is not the answer to make it a more reasonable source of income, I know that it is really ridiculous to gamble to survive, after all to gamble also requires money, why not buy for living needs but instead of using it for gambling, it looks more ridiculous to prioritize gambling rather than spending on daily living needs.

That is a number that is not small considering that Nigeria is a country full of active gamblers, I think they never gamble, 65 million people are involved in gambling that is the biggest record I have ever seen compared to my country, but I am not really sure if they gamble to survive or just for entertainment and fun, but my belief is that most of the players there are addicted to gambling.  Cheesy

Most of the Nigerians are interested in playing online because they think that everything depends on this gambling and it is under the control of the government that's why everyone spends more money to win big. Nigeria's growing interest in gambling is fueled by insufficient financial providers within the country a factor that is the main reason for the adoption of gambling across Africa. Nigerians spend more than half of their wealth on gambling Nigerians began to use the gambling industry as an effective tool to change the way they grow. If you want to make insane amount of money in a year all you have to do is build your own gambling company, and make it available for people in Africa and around the world, it won't take a year for you to become a multi billionaire because millions of people are buying their fantasy every hour of every day, it is something I keep seeing whenever I leave my door going to work in the morning and whenever I am coming back home.

I have never seen whereby a gambling house been dried out, it's always full of different people, both men and women and even school boys that are supposed to be in school, this is what happens when poverty have taken over the sense of the living and the only thing left for them is the hope of a miracle one day, and gambling just fit this empty space than anything else.

The Nigeria government don't even care about it's people, either the casinos are regulated or not I have never heard about a court case on any unregulated casino before, all I know is those big casinos operating in the country are spending a lot of money to the government pocket to stay in the business, and since its a corrupt country this is expected.

Nigeria is one of the top 50 poorest countries in the world, and yet they are spending so much money daily on gambling. It's not a sign of hope anymore; it's a lack of education about the risks involved in gambling. In a country with high poverty rates, gambling shouldn't be the solution to improve lives because it's usually the gambling sites that become rich, not the people. This isn't about blaming gambling sites, but they do make a lot of money when people in desperate situations try their luck in gambling. Eventually, these individuals might become addicted and rely on gambling, which means money keeps flowing to the gambling sites.
It may also be due to a lack of education. Still, they may also often see several people succeeding in winning from gambling, so this will indirectly influence their minds to keep trying even if they lose. With a low poverty rate, they will try to make money from anywhere, even from gambling, so it will probably increase the poverty percentage even higher than before. If they realize that what they need to do is work to make money and not gamble, they might have a better chance of making money. But it seems that the available job opportunities are insufficient for the number of people who want to look for work. This requires serious attention from the government so they can find a solution.

I've been thinking that Nigeria is one of the developing country and seeing the total number of bettors there, I think most of them have the money saved for gambling purposes and we can assume that they really rely on gambling since they believe that they can win big on betting. Most probably the casinos they are playing are regulated and safe because imagine, almost half of your population are into gambling and yet the government didn't regulate any casinos.

It seems like gambling is still a hope for people in Nigeria so they use gambling to make money. But I think it's not just people from Nigeria but also people from other countries who still use gambling to make money. They still believe that they can make money from gambling so they still try. But if they realize that it will never be easy and they will experience more and more losses, they should not try so hard and try to win the gambling game. The news about people winning from gambling makes them think that they can also win their gambling games. But we don't know whether they still rely on gambling to survive but they shouldn't because they will only experience defeat and lose their money.

Since Nigeria is a third world country there's an inequality of wealth distributions where the richest own a lot of money and most of people are poor, it's true if they're solely depend on gambling as a source of income.

Poor people don't have enough money, how they can have money to gamble? obviously it's for making more money.

Nigeria has an income inequality of 1 to 14 for the top 10% to the bottom 50% of the population and 1 to 37 for the top 1% to the bottom 50%.

Wealth inequality or wealth gap measures wealth distribution in a country. It is the difference between the richest and the poorest in a country or location.
I don't know if Nigeria has some sort of financial support for the greater poor but one thing is I'm sure, there's not much financial literacy on majority of the poor people in that country, just like other third world country. I think that they see gambling as one of the source of income that's why they actively deal with it even in reality, there's a lot of risk in it. Poor stays poor because of how the wealth gap in majority of the third world country.

I'm from a third world country and I know how hard it is to climb from poor to lower middle class and it's much harder from lower middle class to higher middle class. The opportunities from each wealth brackets are not the same as well as the education that an individual receives. It's just sad that there are poor people who treats gambling as a source of income and get stuck with that idea.

When a third of the population is involved in gambling (and if you take away the children and the elderly who no longer need anything, then this is not a third, but rather half) then it looks like an epidemic. I don't know how bad gambling affects most Nigerians, maybe they have fun responsibly and don't have any problems with gambling, but from the outside it looks terrible.
Basing up on the numbers then it is really that quite alarming but if there's nothing that we can see about on some odd actions and doings then there's nothing we can do if they are really that a fan
on making up bets but as said that this is 3rd world country on which it does basically means that people arent really that mostly that being rich but still getting involved with gambling?
This do totally shows that they are really that addicted to gambling which basing up on the population number and the % of those gamblers then we can say that they are really that getting
involved that much with gambling. Gambling industry is really indeed making that huge revenue considering about almost a billion $$ a day? Whatt?
Just like you had mentioned on which this is really that still excluded on online crypto gambling too which means that numbers arent still that precise but
pretty sure it would really be just that more.

I’m not afraid of the amount of money in this industry because if you take the amount of money in the alcohol industry or even the bread industry, there will be billions a day. The percentage of people involved in this scares me, it even looks unreal. I knew several addicted gamblers, but the acute period of their addiction lasted no more than a few years. I don’t think Nigerians are special people who can spend their money on gambling for years and never end up with it. But if you believe these statistics, then this is exactly the case.
