I hate that line. People might not have anything to hide but they most certainly don't want everybody knowing their private business and it's no business of the states either.
Yes, info can be used to cast doubt about your credentials in the far future. It doesn't matter if it is true or not, info can be twisted to suit anyone's opinion and view. If you have nothing to hide that's good for you, but that is not the point point of privacy.
