Well, that's how luck works.
It's basically a lottery system. The network announces a new lottery winner every 60 seconds. Every hash you submit is equivalent to buying more lottery tickets. But since there's so many people buying so many tickets, each one decreases your own chances. One day you might get 3 in a row. Other days you might not get any. That's where the law of averages comes into play, as long as you average it out over a long enough period of time, you will see you are getting rewards at a predictable rate.
Edit: Also, the general rule of thumb is that you should only solo mine if you have enough hash power to consistently solve at least one block per day. Otherwise you will get way too much variance and it will mostly just be an exercise in frustration.

The first day I tried it, I found 2 blocks within a few minutes. That was when the difficulty was 1+, then 2+.
