I can run Bitcoin through Tor - does it make Bitcoin anonymous payment system? If that's really the case that you have to run Byteball throught Tor to make blackball anonymous it should be clarified. There's not a single word about it in the whitepaper.

Byteball whitepaper says nothing about being anonymous payment system. It allows private transactions. Privacy and anonymity are two different things.

The title of this topic contains the word "untraceable". How the hell is it untraceable if everybody is scattering around their ips whenever they pay. Cmon. It's just word twisting promising something that is not here. Get back to RingCT and Monero for privacy. Trumpeting your ip to whoever you pay is as private as a credit card with your name on it.

It says in the title what it does. Since private transaction data is not stored in the DAG, you can't trace it. It is not meant to hide your IP or to be a replacement for TOR. If you worry about your IP that much, you should use TOR, not byteball.

Can you still receive bytes using an old address?  I won bytes in a free giveaway but they were sent to an old address.

Only if you did a backup, that you can restore your wallet.

What free giveaway you meant? There's only one distribution happened 1-2 days ago. There's no other free giveaways.

A dev from another coin gave away bytes to his investors.  Man so i'm shit outta luck on getting that ?  I wasn't aware that the address changes after use?

I gave away 3GB to some of my investors that bothered to PM me to say they wanted some. I will give away more Bytes later for my investors:

I think if you make private payment using blackbytes, your transactions will not be recorded in the database. If you make purchases using blackbytes, you can use the tor hub which hides all the IP info, so it is untraceable payments.
Then it should say "untraceable if you use Tor or other service to effectively hide your IP". But that doesn't sound appealing.

Other than that, I edited my previous post. Was not allowed to post as I am new.

Is the witness list included in transaction and cannot be tampered with?
I have no idea. The whole witness thing is a mystery to me. It actually looks like a potential vulnurability - have you seen the "schism" idea in the white paper? It's scary.
Schism?

Read the whitepaper but started skimming around the assets/bonds/funds talk - to economical for me.

Yeah, try CTRL+F "schism". When witnesses form a cartel and start to censor the chain or conduct other self interest behaviour the only way out of this is for the rest of the network to create other coin. Sounds like a fork. Nobody is talking about it because nobody has read the white paper.
Yup that is a schism, another term for fork.

Byteball at least has blackbytes so the amount is not seen on the global ledger/DAG. Which bitcoin doesnt have.

So, byteball over tor is more anonymous than bitcoin.

What makes a transaction anonymous is the fact that you wouldn't be able to link the sender / receiver via a sender address and a receiver address, i.e. you wouldn't be able to see who send to who. This can be solved in many different ways and I am not too sure how Byteball is doing it. The other aspect of a transaction is obviously the amount being sent. This can potentially be tracked. So, if you obscure both the sender and the amount you have an anonymous transaction. If you add Tor you will hide the IP of the parties and make it near impossible to identify the sender / receiver. In our project we use ring-signatures to unlink the sender and receiver and dual stealth addresses so that no two addresses can be linked to each other.

Bitcoin is far from anonymous and all the transactions and change address and input addresses etc. is public in the ledger. The only thing that isn't recorded is the IP but that can easily be found.

EDIT: All clear, not a vulnerability, in the transaction is a witness_list_unit and for one I tested with it showed me this one oj8yEksX9Ubq7lLc+p6F2uyHUuynugeVq4+ikT67X6E= which has as text "Let there be light", nice. So it seems to keep a list of witnesses as unit and requires transactions to refer to these to be included in the main chain, and that cant be edited / proxied.

Agreed. Encrypted messaging and transfer of value anonymously as byteball's best chance of success. It does those two very well

I wondered about this too Smiley To make a private transaction you need to first pair your device with your counterparty. Doesn't it reveal your ip?

Tonych links to a workaround of running Byteball through TOR.

Description for whoever is interested in how to run byteball throw TOR:
.......

Thank you for very detailed description, it'll be helpful for anybody who wants to run Byteball through TOR too!

He also gives this information.

Today I builded byteball from source on an ubuntu 64 bit virtualbox guest (clear internet) using node.js 64 bit and NW.js 64 bit.  The host was the same (a good desktop with good internet).
It synchronized to completion in 1 h 45 min and byteball.sqlite ended with 522 Mb.

Yesterday on the same host and whonix 32 bit virtualbox guest (presumably throw TOR) it was 2 h to completion and and byteball.sqlite ended with 518 Mb.

Looks great work. So byteball can communicate with TOR network I guess. Do you still need to create some .onion hosts so that it can distribute things and have all default witness etc, so it can completely run inside TOR?

Yes, it's great news.
Running .onion hosts is not required.  If you are a merchant (such as a pizza bot https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.16330266) and want to hide your IP, you just connect to the hub through TOR.  Your clients don't have to mess with TOR at all, they connect to the hub via clear internet (all chats are end-to-end encrypted).

You could do it over tor onion services or i2p hidden "eepsites" I guess?

Obviously but that doesn't sound like anonymous payments if I have to hide behind Tor to make it anonymous.
