I have found my old mining address which still has about 0.7btc in it...

https://www.blockchain.com/explorer/addresses/btc/1CASsBYhRAFrJkQXzw8E2di7vP6FhQyEpC?page=1

The question is, I know I was using an old Samsung phone and the Schildbach wallet, this was so early on that I still have emails from where I was asking him asking for pin unlock because I thought it was insecure!

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.schildbach.wallet

This app used to like to backup the keys to a file called bitcoin-wallet-keys-xxx-xx-xx (xxx being the date)

The thing is I cannot locate this backup, but I do have the phone, does anyone here know of any good software to scan the phone with, the phone was wiped at some point so needs to be pretty low level kinda stuff...  Huh

Any hope of doing this or am I wasting my time?

No, you are not wasting your time. That is a lot of money and you should not give up on it so easily. Unless you are rich and it's peanuts to you. Tongue

If I were in your shoes, I would probably take the phone to an expert on data recovery. I am sure there is still a way to get the data back. But you should make sure that they cannot just take your money because you have sensitive data on there. Take somebody with you as a witness and tell the expert all about it. Let him acknowledge that info and accept your request.

OP, don't mind this too much, maybe I am just a dirty minded person who likes to over think, I don't know why my mind thinks that you may not be the owner of that wallet?

Maybe you need the owner has some bitcoin and the only that belongs to the owner was this phone? Hope that's not the case? Because first thing after creating a bitcoin wallet comes the recovery seed, you can't even go the next page without verifying those words first.

So anyone, either newbie or not, who opens. A new bitcoin wallet will have to understand the importance of recovery seed at the moment, I don't know about others but something keeps telling me that this doesn't belong to you.

Are you high? Why would I make it up about a dead wallet from 13 years ago? It was 100% my wallet, you were clearly not about in those days. The Android app was less than secure, there was no lock on the app, so someone with your phone could just send your BTC to anyone they wanted and the backup was your seed just emailed to you! lol

Here is an example email I still have from the miner bot.

Which type of Samsung phone is this exactly?

Because I know when it comes to iPhones, somewhere around the iPhone 4S-5 era it was impossible to recover anything because of the way the data was stored on the device. It was basically encrypted and if you wiped it the key was destroyed and backup was not possible. It’s been years since I looked into this but this I am sure of. It’s because I wanted to sell an old iPhone and wanted to make sure my data was completely safe from the new user.

Find this out first before you spend money on a data recovery service.

Its not even a Samsung, i got it out the box today and its a Nexus 4 made by LG i think, doesnt have a memory card so must be internal storage....

Op I think you should look for some cyber specialist or phone engineer that will use some tools to recover your mobile device, because $45k is not a joking amount here. $0.7btc can take some people here 10 to 15 years to accumulate if possible, because btc price is increasing. I will just sudjest you listen to what other senior college above has said. Btc is too expensive to be left in that wallet do all what you can to restore it even if you lost $5k to get it back don't mind, just do it. I believe there is no problem without solution all you just need is time.

Clone your hard drive and then take it to a phone repair shop, if the hard drive isn't damaged and the phone is still functioning just fine then there's still a possibility in recovery. That's a lot of bitcoin just to be left alone when there's options there that can make you recover it, my only problem with my recommendation to you is that there's a possibility that the repair/recovery guy might get to the wallet first and steal that bitcoin from you but I don't think that's the case. I hope that you'll recover that bitcoin, that's got to be a pain to not recover it so do whatever it takes. Data recovery specialist is your best option right now OP and hopefully you give us an update when you get it.

The i7 has always been a multi-core processor.

Sorry auto correct put the hyphen in the wrong place, a single core-i7 is what I meant, which was indeed a quad-core processor with hyper threading,

Dave, you seem very pedantic, I'm guessing you don't have too many friends IRL....?

No more of a comment of if you thought you were mining with this (single core processor) but were actually mining with that (multi core i7) then are you sure that you don't have the old PC around (which might have more info about the backups in addition to what you have on the phone).

I do a lot of posing on my phone but using it to remote into a desktop so a lot of times things don't come out as what I was thinking.

And it's not because I'm pedantic, it's because I'm an ass that I don't have friends :-)

I think it's possible to recover the data but you can't get it for free you need to bring the unit a professional recovery specialist who can directly access the nand IC where the data were saved before.
Usually, people who can do that are those who have jTag tools like phone technicians or any phone recovery services.
I'm that's not cheap or even buying this jtag tools its too expensive and you don't know how to operate it. So your only option is to hire a professional for a data service.

Another option I think is by rooting the unit and use some recovery app to recover deleted data I do not know if it will work on formatted units and also not all units are can able to rooted so it depends on what unit model you have.

Yes, he needs to contact a local data recovery specialist, one who is trustworthy enough.

It's not that strange, 2013 was the oldest wallet/ backup I could find at the time and just assumed that's how far back I went.

Since '21 I have found access to older emails and reference to the payouts to this wallet from a now defunct mining pool.

I first remember mining BTC on a single-core i7 CPU, so I was about even earlier than that too.

And no, this was a different wallet that I managed to crack the encryption on and was in fact an empty wallet from 2013 incorrectly named.

The i7 has always been a multi-core processor.

But anyway, you are more then likely wasting your time. The odds of finding the file with any kind of good data are just about zero.
After all this time, and an older phone like that with limited storage vs. today's phones with tons of storage the data was more then likely overwritten more then once.

Even a quick wipe and re-install of most early android phones made data recovery just about impossible.

I've only just found the phone and yes should have made a backup but this was 21 Aug 2011! This was so early, as I said in the OP there wasn't even any unlock security on the BTC app. There wasn't much value to protect...

I didn't even know there was 0.7btc in the wallet still.

My main question is about searching the phone, all the "recovery" software i have been looking at is looking for and sorting out certain file types, like .jpg, .mov etc as you'd probably want from a wiped phone.

I'm looking for a file that doesn't even have a file type!

Strange...  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes
In 2021 it was "early 2013":
I've been involved in BTC since early 2013, so I understand fully how it works. All of your comments were strawman or just pure ad hominem...

What is it about forums and the way they attract such self-righteous morons? Why can't someone just have a discussion without having a superiority complex?

I was not making reference that mining is the diver of price, it was just a turn of phrase that both the price and the hash rate are both going to the moon!

No one has yet given an expliantion any how over 700kwh for a transaction is in any way justifiable???

So what happens in the future.....We just continue down this path until we need more hash power than there is available electricity in the world, sure exponential growth in price is exciting but exponential growth of energy use is not...

Btw, is it the same wallet as the one you posted about in 2020?
Hi all,

I've been searching old HHDs for my 2011 mining activities, I found an old address I used to payout from a pool with 1btc in still but have no clue about the keys, but that's another story lol

I did, however, find a text file named "bitcoin-wallet-keys" which got my interest.
when I open it the format isn't something I recognise, anyone care to point in the right direction?

this is what's in the file 4 lines of text, 239 chars.....?

If you've made a backup on the phone storage, then it could possibly be retrieved given that that specific sector hasn't been overwritten. As such, it would likely have to be unused or used minimally or this to have any chance of success.

If you have never made a backup, then your phone would have to be rooted and to access the secure storage. For this, it is likely not feasible either but it would be worth a try. Phones from earlier on are easier to root.

Yes, it can be recovered but only by a specialist. It would be an encrypted recovery (nonsensical)

Didn't you use a micro SD on your phone? It may be that there is something in it... Regarding recovery, it may be, but I advise you to consult a professional before doing anything, because if a file is written over the previously installed location, recovery will be more difficult.

All you need now if truly you have no backup from what you stated here, you need make much enquiry from different professional to know if they can handle the scanning recovery your data without loss before venturing into.
I have face challenges after wiping some of my data saved on my phone so to some issue couldn't recover them as the details where stalled in the phone.

Wow you really were an early adopter. I assumed you had like 50BTC and you spent most of it and left the 0.7BTC because it was spare change and not worth sweeping. I did that in the past with 0.01BTC or so fractions.

Regarding the recovery. I don’t think you can recover it since it was wiped. If this was a regular hard drive then you could recover because the files are still there just the files are hidden. With the space of a phone it’s completely different.

Like someone mentioned before, see if you can get a recovery expert and maybe they can help you out.

I am not an expert. But maybe it is a good idea to makea duplicate of the drive you want to recover in case things go wrong: I found this article:

https://www.challengeros.com/tutorial/how-to-clone-a-hard-drive-for-data-recovery-and-forensic-purposes/

Maybe it helps :

Disk Drill, Recuva, Dr.Fone for Android/iOS are some of the good recovery tools you can use but they are not free if you want to use their premium features, I tried Dr.Fone a while ago but not the premium one but I think its a good one, but still, recovering data is not that hard, you can seek some specialist to recover data for you, maybe you could find some expert here. I suggest you to make a thread of a bounty on the service page, as a little reward for the expert will do the work for you.

If you are OK with it, besides it, recovering data by yourself, while having no technical skills might cost you the least chance that you had if you would have chosen to hire an expert. I hope you got my point, I can understand you must be under some pressure and excitement too, so in these feelings don't give your seed phrase or keys, etc. to anyone, which means don't do anything dumb.
