You can probably get better than $1. A $12.50 Casinocoin is not outside the realm of possibility if you go a few years out.

Like goldseal mentioned, I would store on a paper wallet OR use VirtualBox to create a separate OS to store the coins while we look into the issues with the OS X Wallet(mine doesn't work either since updating). If you don't know how to do this shoot me a PM and I can write up or refer you to a quick tutorial!

Make a paper wallet or fire up a linux vm. You can even store the wallet.dat on a usb.
