New DeepOnion Release 1.8 with Various Improvements
DeepOnion Version 1.8.0 is a maintenance release. It has the following enhancements:
For non-DV version, by default the blockchain check will not be performed. This is to accelerate the startup. The user can use following ways to verify the blockchain:
(a) set flag "checkblockchain=1" in conf file, and the startup will perform the check
(b) do it after wallet starts at QT UI: Help->Debug Window->Information, click on "Verify blockchain" button
(c) do it after wallet starts through CLI command "verifyblockchain"
For DV-version, the blockchain check is mandatory and config flag will be ignored. This is because DV will need to do checks anyway so won't save startup time.
Tightens some sanity checks when receiving new blocks.
Also it adds latest checkpoints to make blockchain more secure and includes miscellaneous small bug fixes.
Version 1.8.0 is not a mandatory upgrade, but users are highly recommended to upgrade, due to the better security of the wallet.

The wallet is working though it takes time to start first time. Try to correct in future releases the incorrect balance when started first time. Same problem was with the older wallets.

Regarding The Article That Mentions Vulnerabilities Of Some Coins

Recently an article about newly found vulnerabilities of some coins was published.
(for example https://www.zdnet.com/article/security-flaws-found-in-26-low-end-cryptocurrencies/ (Security flaws found in 26 low-end cryptocurrencies | ZDNet)).
The research team contacted us a few months ago and asked us to check whether DeepOnion is affected by the issues. The dev team investigated the issues and concluded that the described issues will not affect DeepOnion.
These vulnerabilities won't cause any loss of the coins, it will only cause the wallet client to crash (due to resource exhaustion). DeepOnion is using the original PoS scheme from PeerCoin, it does not use the so-called "PoSv3" where the vulnerability is discovered (actually the dev team always thinks the original PoS scheme by PeerCoin is the best).
This being said, the dev team has tightened our checks in the wallet when a new block arrives. This further enhances the security of the DeepOnion. The new release (version 1.8.0) today includes the security enhancement.
Although it is not mandatory to upgrade the wallet, the users are highly encouraged to upgrade to take advantage of better security. DeepOnion dev team is always taking the security very seriously and is actively improving the features and quality of the coin. Yesterday, price dropped but volume increased to around 3 BTC (at the time of writing), but now the price has come back near to where it was previously before the decrease. Good recovery.

Are deeponion funds affected from the cryptopia hack or are our onions save?

So true, but I was swing trading to accumulate some sweet onions.
Some funds are stolen some not as I understand what happened to cryptopia.
Maybe someone knows if onions still are in cryptopias or hackers hands....
Maybe only ETH-based tokens were affected but this isn't confirmed an nobody is sure about the information. I suggest to wait for an official announcement because everything else you read is speculation. Your point is interesting, can you check the cryptopia address you sent the ONION to and see if your ONION is still there? Maybe others can confirm this as well.
I think the hack mainly affected Ether, among two other lesser known coins. DeepOnion was not there. So, DeepOnion is probably not affected. I think even if somebody would have Ether, if these three coins have been used for buying bids or selling by somebody, they too might have gotten locked and so might have been saved as hacker might be needing to cancel all buying and selling orders (of three coins) first before withdrawing these coins.
Let's not make more idle speculations. The moment that people have access to their funds again, we should have confirmation of whether any of the funds are missing or not. Assuming that Cryptopia will permit access to the accounts at some point.

For ONION, the number of cryptopia exchanges is very large, and now it is hacked, regardless of the final processing results, will have a significant impact on ONION transactions. Now ONION has entered the ST watch list on the kucoin exchange. The number of ONIONs traded by Cryptopai and Kucoin exchanges is very large in the total number of ONION transactions.
Agree what you said. Most of the trading volume was from Cryptopia which is hacked and Kucoin where we are in now *ST status. We have also another exchange Coindeal where we also have good volumes. Also note Novaexchange was our first exchange which went offline for months and just recently came back. I have seen people just move from one exchange to another whenever this sort of things happen, as Novaexchange has little to no volume of DeepOnion trades now. Exchanges will come and go. We just need to focus on bringing more exchanges and if possible bring extra volumes to already existing.
