yes bitcoin core is the BEST, (correct me if i am wrong)
BUT
you have to download more than 20 gigabytes of data (blockchain) and
ALSO
every time you want to send or update your wallet to see how much you own (except for checking it online) you need to update bitcoincore and it might take a while

I would say bitcoin core is one of the best, because some people value security the most while some prefer to have a convenient set up.

The current blockchain is over 26 GB already.

We have about 140 new blocks a day, average block size is about 300 KB (https://btc.blockr.io/charts), and so if you open the bitcoin core program once a week, you should prepare to download roughly 294 MB of data every time.

just use bitcoin core. i've been using it for years, and other than a stolen laptop with approximately 7.43 btc on it, i've never had any bitcoins stolen from me. luckily i had also kept a text file of the private keys on a thumbdrive and i immediately retrieved the coins and sent them out of the wallet to a new address.

So i can't just click pay from the wallet like Paypal , i have to use keys?

This is like learning a new foreign language. Cheesy

Guess my previous post made you confused lol. My bad.  Grin

To receive a payment, you just need to give your address to the payer.
And to send a payment, you just need to enter the payee's address and the amount of bitcoin you want to send out.

For ordinary users, you don't need to know how the private keys work or how bitcoin works under the hood. At the early stage, just remember that you should save a copy of your wallet file and keep them away from everyone. Smiley

No, it's very easy, just like Paypal.
Using wallet to spend bitcoin is just a click and type activites.

1. Choose/paste the destination address
2. Type the amount of BTC
3. Click send

You better try using blockchain.info wallet, or multibit/electrum client first and feel how easy it is to use Bitcoin! Smiley
After that you may learn more about private key backup and etc ...

Is there anything i need to do with the private keys or are they just there as a extra precaution?

The private keys are the only things you need to spend your bitcoin. In other words, if I have your private keys, I can spend your bitcoin.

You should make a backup of your wallet (essentially your private keys) so that even when blockchain.info goes belly up, you would still be able to import your private keys to other wallet and spend your bitcoin.
Of course you don't want anyone to get your private keys, so you should encrypt your backup before storing it on your external HDD, USB, dropbox, or email account.

blockchain.info wallet is by far the best online bitcoin wallet, and AFAIK it is the only one that enables its user to have the private keys.
Your bitcoin should be fairly safe if you have enabled 2-factor authentication (2fa).

Any online wallets worth considering for small amount of bitcoin?

It has to be something with a simple signup that doesn't require the user to jump though hoops such as photo ID or a passport just to send and receive bitcoins

I had a look at coinbase but found the site confusing as it seemed more about buying and selling coins.

My reason for a simple online wallet is i wish to try out these PTC sites that give you a small amount of BTC for watching adverts and doing simple tasks.

Thanks

blockchain is onlne for a long time, you could give it a try. be careful with other online wallets, sometimes they are run by scammers

Blockchain.info would be completely fill your requirement. Been using it for 1,5 years and never faced a single problem.
Agree, but keep as you sayed author small amounts there. Never trust bigger amounts to online wallet.

Thanks all , Blockchain is the type of thing i was looking for. Smiley

When i signup will blockchain give me a single wallet address i can give too all the PTC sites i try as the talk of private keys on the blockchain site looks confusing?

Thanks

I'm not sure if mycelium have online wallet.

mycelium don't have any online wallet yet just for mobile devices but in this case blockchain.info is the best for OP.

I just used trusted gambling sites. They keep all their funds offline anyways, but this doesn't help if it is the site itself that runs off with the coinage.

I used doge-dice.com for all my DOGE (site is now since gone Sad.)

Gotta fight the temptation though Tongue

Blockchain.info and coinbase aren't bad either.

Did you lose your coins there? At dogedice?

Nah, I invested right from the get go and made like 20 million or so.

I just lost my coins @ prc though :-| *grumbles*
I'm a better investor than gambler....

Lost like 20-25 ish @ JD too.
