I stood up a 4x R9 280 rig yesterday.  Took about $1900 in parts and a couple hours work but I admit I have a pretty decent knowledge of PC building.  Without any real tweaks I'm hashing away at ~2800.  So less than $1 a hash.  You guys are asking basically double that plus the hosting and management fees and it's not coming online for a few weeks as the LTC difficulty really begins to soar over the next couple months.  I think that you will struggle to ROI on this.  Yes the hardware resale might ultimately push it into profitability but that's going to be a long road.  I am not saying they won't do a great job with managing this as they do a great job with all their GBs but it just might not make financial sense.

May I ask where did you purchased your R9 280x from? And what is your ROI estimate on this system?

Thanks

Why does everyone keep bringing up R9 280x's? Our supplier is out of these and we can't find a reliable source of them. These are being made with R9 290x's
The 280x's are better cards. They only get 100kh/s less and they are $100-200 cheaper. They also use less power and produce less noise/heat.

Because the 280s are better from a cost/performance standpoint Smiley  Same reason everyone wanted 7950s.  Don't get me wrong the R290s are nice, they just are power hogs and you don't get the same ratio out of them.  The cost of building with 290s makes it harder to ROI because the increased hash they give doesn't outweigh the premium you pay for them.

I'm working on raising some funds to get in on this group buy.  I'm not tech savvy enough for my own setup, so this should be a good fit for me and I expect the LTC value to increase as cryptocurrencies become more well known to average joes like myself.

You make it sound way harder than it is. I can build a rig from scratch in 2 hours including os load with steady hash rate no cuts, scrapes are any of the other FUD.

Using what cards?  I find it is a pain in the ass sometimes trying to get different cards working together.  I had a 5830, 2x5850, and a 6950 in my rig and I had to try a lot of different versions of Catalyst and cgminer before they all wanted to work properly.

Then I tore that apart and am using 4x5850s and working on getting the parts for my other rig... put the 6950 in my sons computer so he can play stupid FFXIV

I run 7970's right now and will be building my R9 290 rig as soon as the cards come. My 7970 rigs are all based on the same hardware from the mobo up so after I built the first the others were just imaged which is much quicker to setup.

I plan on water cooling everything on the R9 and making it my mining showpiece Cheesy

Nice.  I bet it isn't hard getting the newer cards to work together, but mix-matching 58xx, 68xx, 69xx, 78xx, etc. seems to be problematic at times.  I like making rigs with all 5850s though.  They are really energy efficient, and I can usually find them for $60-80 on Craigslist... just gotta hunt for em.

This makes no sense financially and if it's going to be hosted in a data center it should be using specialized GPU mining racks that can run more GPUs per motherboard/CPU.  You really need open racks and to use PCI-E riser ribbons if you want to build a GPU mining rig, using a desktop computer case makes no sense especially because heat is a huge issue with scrypt mining.  Also to be honest, scrypt mining is VERY finicky compared to SHA256 mining, you're talking about constant lockups and crashes if heat isn't perfectly controlled.  The amount of time that's going to go into keeping everything running is going to be much higher than with bitcoins and given how the Bitfury towers already caused a ton of problems I'm not sure the coop has enough manpower to keep racks of scrypt miners up and running.

The new facility comes with me also having hired 6 more people to help out. I am currently training them right now.

yeah it is a real pain to find a cgminer + catalyst combo for your card.  they vary.

I have cgminger 2.8.3 with catalyst 13.11 running the sapphire with windows 7 ultimate and an asus maximus gene.

but if you put in another card it may or may not work.

I read all the numbers and I said I have to try to get my leftover btc rig mining ltc.  so after 34-40 hours of trying to make it work.  I am pulling 650khs with a hd7970 rig can add a second card  I HAVE A HD7790 I will pop it in and get the rig to 1k.  Now that it is cold in New Jersey running a pc pulling 300-450 watts helps to warm the house.  If it was not for this thread I never would have got the rig to run ltc. My Thanks  to dZcoop.   Making money for me in all kinds of ways.  next i need to figure the lit coin block chain wallet out as it is a bit different then the btc chain.   I am earning about .3 ltc a day with 650  kh running.

Good to hear that you doing well. I may build my own system to play with

I'm running 10 7970's and am making way more money of sexcoin than LTC. I just bought 4 more 290's. 280's are a way better deal if you can find them. Running rigs does make a lot of noise and heat but if you can handle that you will come ahead in the end over this GB and will have hardware you own that you can resell and you don't have to rely on anyone else or vote on when you sell what you do etc.

I think DZ has a lot going on and am wondering when they will start getting in over their heads if they aren't already.

I guess the thing is guys that building a 6 GPU litecoin rig with 280s costs something like $2600.  That's ~4500 hash rate.  Assume $5/day for power which is pretty accurate.  That's $150/month for power.  Cooling is a $10 box fan Wink  I get that there is overhead because of hosting fees, and I get that you want to make a profit.  But your rig cost is almost double what I would expect.  That's where I'm struggling.

- One more thing: instead of closed cases, we may use open cases that can fit 2 mobos and up to 8 GPUs, if there's enough stock available.

Yeh do a knc, up the spec at the last minute.

There is a litecoin project you guys might actually be interested that's right up your alley. Jaisonlee from these  forums is involved they are ready to go live soon.

Cool! Thanks bitterdog. I'll check it out, as that's definitely up our alley. There's a number of companies attempting to bring ASICs and FPGAs to the Scrypt market; it's like Bitcoin ASICs Gen1 all over again, except with Scrypt. I'm keeping an eye on this space to see who has a shot of making it.

Who knows who will win and who will not even make it to market. All I know is that whoever launches real hardware will have ASIC or FPGA Scrypt hardware that we'll likely sell.

BTW: I've always appreciated your input and your objective, even handedness.

Cheers!
