there are altcoin users who may have valuable information, techniques and ideas which would be of benefit to all.

Provably wrong.

Live and let live, I say!

Provably wrong long-term. Nature does not work that way and it is provably fine for as long as humans do not start messing with it, "fixing" stuff, etc.

So prove it.

Welcome to the SaltySpitoon, how Tough are ya?
there are altcoin users who may have valuable information, techniques and ideas which would be of benefit to all.

Provably wrong. Bitcoin profited in no way from altcoins, it is the other way around. Not only that absolutely nothing invented by altcoin developers is
added to Bitcoin but allowing altcoin market to grow puts noticable preasure on BTC due to most altcoin miners cashing out to fiat to cover their mining
costs. Not directly helping Bitcoin, more or less openly wishing it dies, dumping BTC (or LTC) for fiat but still allowed to do practically everything here?

It clearly shows forum needs agenda change. It is just like with everything, the ones who made a progress will become an obstacle for further progress.

Live and let live, I say!

Provably wrong long-term. Nature does not work that way and it is provably fine for as long as humans do not start messing with it, "fixing" stuff, etc.

While the entire debate is moot, as the section wont be removed for the reason Maged said on page one, it is not true that Bitcoin has never adopted features from other coins. In 2011/2012, I stopped using BTC for a while, because the QT wouldn't show 0 conf transactions. So I'd buy BTC on OTC and have to wait 10-20 minutes to find out if I was scammed or not. Solidcoin came out and showed 0 conf transactions and by coincidence or not, Bitcoin then had that feature a bit later.

While some of the copied coins are annoying, who cares? If you don't like them, don't get involved. There are a few rather bright devs out there experimenting with new features that could benefit Bitcoin. The Bitcoin community as a whole has figured out more or less how not to get scammed, give it a few more months, and Alt Coin traders will be pros at analyzing new coins for risks and potential as well. I'm at the point where I can look at a few factors about a coin, and instantly know if it will be at least fairly sucessful or not. Sooner or later everyone else will figure that out to, and Devs will pitch their ideas, the good ones will start, and the bad ones will go back to the drawing board, or never exist.

In the spirit of Cryptos, we vote with our hashpower, not by how many people complain about a topic in a forum thread. If it sucks, don't mine it. All the forums itself cares about, is spam and how many resources are going to the Alt Coin Section.

The ALT subforum no longer serves any purpose except for fraudsters hucksters and scammers to rip people off.

Make them build their own forums.  A HUGE disservice is being done by diverting people away from Bitcoin.

However my preference is to see the ALTS forum GONE.  This forum is BTCTALK.  If people want to market their scamcoin let them build a forum and attract people.  The sub is now a place of abuse and a hotbed of fraud, there is a huge danger new people will get sucked into a scam and turn their back on BTC, when we could have educated them about BTC instead.

Lets END the freeloading here for the scams and fraud.  I could maybe accept a Litecoin subforum just because they have devs that work on the BTC client, and help out.  However that should be up to the community, there is no reason we owe a space to these people trying to rip everyone off.  A year or two ago interesting technical discussions could be found there - now it is truly a SCAR on this website.

I totally agree. It is in the best interest of all cryptocoins if altcoin threads finaly move elsewhere, to their own forums or some altcoin-only forums.
With everything cryptocoin happening right here on this forum it became a major target. The whole cryptocoin movement would be damaged badly
if this forum goes down for long or even forever. Just look at MtGox ... luckily many people moved to other exchanges before it started going wrong!

IMHO, ya got a logic problem there.

I do not think it can be clearly demostrated taht having an altcoin section makes this form any more olikely to be attacked by hackers than with out.

There are plenty of people out there with the ability who dislike crypto or who hack forums simply because they can.

This forum has been attacked before, it will be attacked again, with or without the presence of an altcoin section.  Besides, there are altcoin users who may have valuable information, techniques and ideas which would be of benefit to all.

There are always those who cannot exercise the personal responsibility to not visit a site or thread with which they disagree so therefore require esternal rules and regulations to control their actions.

Got a problem with a thread?

Let's ban the topic!

Works the same way in the real world.

Got a problem with (Insert Your Particular Complaint)?

Let's get a new law!

There's already a (recent) thread asking for the same:

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/its-time-for-theymos-to-kill-the-alt-section-438043

And there have been plenty of others in one form or another.

This was my (mining focussed) take on it:
New people come here for the bitcoin, think they can make money from it usually through mining, then get told the only way to make money is through altcoin mining. Then they enter the hell that is the infinite planes of altcoin and create their own coin, then proselytise the virtues of altcoins over bitcoin, and the cycle repeats.

IMO we'd be better without it, but you'd need mods to just keep tossing things in the bin all day. It would only be a matter of time before the talk died down.
Agreed. Create altcointalk.org and spread your scams (or not scams - w/e) there.

That is simply not true. I am by no means a scammer and you have no reason stating so. (I know it is not what you intended to say, I am just pointing out the misuse of your words) Wink

Redirect users here; https://cryptocointalk.com/ we would love to have them over. CCT is moderated, it would be nice to see how scammers are handled there.

Who mentioned you?
The altcoin subforum doesn't provide anything useful any more. 99% of the posts are utter garbage, spam and scams (coins and whatnot).

Just registered.  Looks good to me!

I don't think that one forum can hurt another.

There is no cyrptocurrency war going on and any given crypto will stand or fall quite on its own.

Like "Beware, new coins are often scams, tread carefully and be cautious about putting your money in a coin just being released, chances are you will eventually lose it all, be sure to think critically."

There is a warning by Gavin that's stickied there.
Maybe we should do the warning Securities-board-style...? Not that I think that it will really help...

In Collateral I Trust.
We keep it around as a trashbin of sorts. It's either we move threads about alt-coins there, or we delete posts about them altogether. That's why we don't have many sections there. That's also why we usually don't moderate anything there unless it is reported.

We don't want to censor alt-coins like so many other forums on the internet censored Bitcoin back in the day. Seriously, there was a time where if you even mentioned Bitcoin on another forum, it was an automatic delete and ban.

In that spirit then wouldn't it make sense to at least put a warning there for new members?

Wouldn't matter. People would still throw funds at them hoping for a big payday.
