How about this idea then?

We have a new members board, and that is the only place new members can post, apart from the meta board exceptions like hacked accounts. They can accrue post count, activity and merits, but the board restriction can only be removed by a mod or admin. This would allow a decent new member to go straight to Junior if he has made the activity. A lot of the bots and low value posters would be detected, and their accounts can be closed. They wouldn't be able to display signatures of course.

I like the idea. A controlled board in which, in order to rank-up, you can join merit contests or something like that. The best publications will obtain the necessary merits to become JR. member (yes, I think it shall be necessary to implement at least 5 merits to become JR), and, once acquired, they can make publications on others.
Each local should have, as well, the newcomers board.

I say that having the "Welcome to the board!" PM sent out to all newly registered Newbies with an extensive and detailed list of helpful links and 'how to get started' that will essentially answer all the repetitive questions we're seeing - the same PM that was suggested by hilariousandco (IIRC) previously - would give us an easy reason to delete all threads like those. I don't think it'd take much additional work from the mods since it's a 'is this a basic question that should be answered in the welcome PM? Delete.' type thing, but we could get some additional mods to balance it out. (I think we're overdue for additional mods anyways.)

The whole newbie jail reintroduction and the AWS solution by Vod is intriguing but it's not the only solution.
Or this could be their first PM (and they can not delete from their inbox, just for further reference)

That is what I said Smiley

Agreed, I was trying to emphasize that they should not be able to delete that PM, in order not to let them complain about not having that first PM at hand, because they have 'accidentally' deleted it somethime ago Smiley

If you send this in the first email, they will simply delete it... or forget about it, and they need these instructions when they browse the forum, so PM seems more handy...

Metawin.com - Truly the best casino ever
What about to close forum, clean from trash and never open it, just keep valuable users? Maybe sounds good for some people.
I am against some of them but let's just forget it, some may spam, some may not, let them waste their free time in nothing, you won't be damaged.

This is a good idea but it won't stop them from asking "how is the ranking system on the forum". This new members somehow needs to be prevented from posting their own threads at first or they must have some kind of limited access to the basics of the forum and Bitcoin overall inside the board. Also having some active merit sources in that board instead of mods and admins taking the process of giving them access to the entirety of the forum, this merit sources will help on ranking up deserving newbies to Jr. Members will also be a fair system for the new members.

Another thing that I see is beneficial from this kind of system is that accounts controlled by bots for bumping services will now have no power on posting. This will help clear spam and shitpost on the forum tremendously.

Dude, there are 2-3 newbies signing up every minute.   Wink

Now that could be a real "block chain", you put them in a chain, and block them from posting until they solve a puzzle, you can increase the difficulty as the number of members increases. Don't foget SegWit as well, their signatures are stored in a separate file.

Maybe, but I'm quite sure that 2-3 newbies a day would be a great daily quota.

I agree the manual promotion of newbies would too be time consuming for overworked moderators.

I opened the beginners board to see what is there, and this is the first thread I saw.
How is the ranking system on the forum?

All you guys who complain about not getting merits need to write to the admins to get these bots and low lifes out of the forum. They are the reason your post aren't being read.

Other same type thread with TITLE "newbie" and with same question "how can I start trading or learning Bitcoin or merit system "

They are not even try to read the pinned post of this forum.they just create the account and start posting without reading anything.

Really there should be some solution for this. For this
We can open only limited section for newbie for 3 days.where they can only read the pinned post of this forum.

Second thing we can ask some basic questions before posting.

Third we can generate registration form , where everyone has to  answer some basic questions about this forum, after that his membership may be approved.

In addition with other AWS services, a newbie account could be promoted out of the newbie jail automatically by the bot once they have met certain criteria.

After a certain amount of time, a user could say "Promote me" and be asked a few questions about the forum rules (to prevent cheating the question database would have to be large and dynamic) and if they answered correctly enough, they get promoted.

The bot could also have access to a portion of the SMF database, and could answer queries like "Why was I banned"?

Maybe Theymos could pay me $100,000 a month to develop it?  (Sorry buddy, couldn't resist)  Tongue

This may be too resource-intensive, but to cut down on redundant threads by legitimate new users, what about some sort of auto-lookup of thread subjects to see similar threads for a particular topic being created?

I agree the manual promotion of newbies would too be time consuming for overworked moderators.

Amazon Web Services has a "pay as you go" service for building a chat bot that could answer all the newbie questions.

Costs $0.00075 per request..   $0.75 per thousand questions.

Similar to how some knowledge bases work, where it shows articles/questions that already exist similar to the search or question being requested and would provide the user an option to see a list of similar threads, based on the topic subject they are trying to create.

I opened the beginners board
That was your mistake, right there.

I've had Beginners & Help on ignore since shortly after I registered.  Even then I realized what a cesspool of idiocy it was, and it hasn't gotten better in the three years since.  New members go there to raise their activity, and I suspect that's pretty much the only reason.  They don't do any reading whatsoever and will create a new topic with an old question rather than search for their answer.  It's ridiculous and I want no part of it.

I would love it if we could have a stupidity detector bot, and if any of these morons on B&H broke the threshold they'd get an autoban--but that's a pipe dream that's not going to happen and I know it.  Still, it's nice to dream sometimes.

Even if you were able to do so, new people are going to join the forum and participate in the scam fest.
The Beginners and Help board is worst and worst each day. I think this is time for mods to erase all repeated posts about merits, ranking and so, for they are not even reading the previous ones, but repeating, again and again, the same junk questions.

I spend some time in that board with the will of helping some newcomers to understand that, in here, begging or spamming is going to lead them to nowhere, but, sadly, it isn't working anymore, this is a spam fest.

That is why my suggestion (and past suggestion of one member before as per the comment on my first post) email to every new member account to inform about basic rules, although the rules is posted and pinned already sometime they don't know they are also required to read it so direct message with the link is much better.

Second is that, we should have a bot that gives warning  to the same topic title to avoid spam by newbie like us.

Well it's just a suggestion, they can ignore it but if taken consideration then I'm happy I hell even a little.

The bot seems like a good proposal, maybe one warning the people of repeated posts.
Emailing each newbie, on the contrary, seems completely impossible, for they are hundreds of newcomers each day and the task would be big. Maybe an automatic email, in which the rules are explained in a simple an understandable way would be nice, and of course, including what is going to happen to those who break the rules...

I'm so fed up with this sort of stuff, that I couldn't even be bothered to ignore or report it. I just quit the board.
The reason why I dont visit that section any more. It is another merit hunting ground for the shitposters hoping some kind hearted soul would grant them some.

The merit system was put in place by Theymos to stop garbage posting.  With the state the forum was in, I think it was almost too late.   It's going to take a long time to pull out of this nosedive and start being a place we can have interesting discussions again.   We all need to be vigilant and let these scammers realize eventually merits will run out.

Mods can ban them. That is one thing. But even if they banned their posts which already have been made - all of them wont be deleted. The ones which are not shitposts will remain. So does it work out the function of "Auto-delete"? It does not.
