But I can't do compressed addresses, unfortunately. It requires an AMD card and Windows, which I don't have.

I'm very interested in getting compressed key generation working on my system though, if I manage to do so I'll let you know.

My current vanity isn't compressed, so I'd be interested to see how much it would cost so I can calculate whether it would be worth it for me to save on fees, in the long run. Alternatively, just to lower the difficulty (and cost) by a little bit, how about whichever of these comes first:

This method can give a dramatic increase in efficiency.

It might work, but it would exchange efficiency for complications. Since it's already complicated enough, and some people actually lost their private key before I found their addy, it's not worth changing vanitygen for this. Especially for short prefixes.
If it works, it could work for large vanity pools, where multiple computers are searching for multiple addresses that pay half a Bitcoin each, but that's outside the scope of this giveaway.

This method can give a dramatic increase in efficiency.
If someone refuses to share their key-parts, you and the other potential address recipients can nuke the troublemaker's trust rating, that would probably be enough of an incentive.

I've read the theory. As far as I know that would compromise any address that's ever been used before (one of the reasons address re-use isn't recommended), as well as any address that's ever been used to sign a message.
In that case there are much bigger fish out there than the vanity addresses generated in this thread. For now, I wouldn't worry about it.

This discussion, however, is better continued a dedicated topic: Quantum computers and Bitcoin.

If that happened, the security of vanity addresses would be the least of our worries. If you can generate part private keys that quickly, than might as well just bruteforce every key in the bitcoin blockchain (or other altcoin) and go for the bigger fish.

It's very secure, for the time being and I expect it to stay secure for a few years, at least.
