the problems with calculating ROI: difficulty is difficult to predict, except that it will continue to go up, generally.  Smiley and don't get me started on pre-orders -- that will really screw your ROI.

If selling block eruptors at the current price is a profitable endeavor for friedcat, imagine what his margins must have been back in March April May ?

You will devalue your computer by running them.

Why?

Your computer will depreciate in price by using your computer components, it is the same as your car. If you your computer can run 10000 hours and you decide to use 1000hours with the erupter you wasted life of your PC.

I'm onboard with most other posters here. You would have to calculate ROI, and from mine and everyone elses numbers it seems like the difficulty has gotten to high. My question though is... what about other cypto-exchanges? Can we not mine for those coins to?

Thanks for all the great thoughts. Yes I have a few USB erupters, just to have some fun, not expect any profit. Don't see even with all those big ASIC rigs that in the promise and not yet delivered will bring in any profit either.

On your own, everyone is correct about the difficulty and never seeing ROI, let alone a profit.  Take a look over at Solarwindming. They have some great incentives for everyone just getting started, to even well seasoned investors.
Check it out here: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/official-thread-the-solarwind-mining-company-297334

Maybe worth your while if you're just getting started and are interested in mining.

(side note, this wait to post thing is terrible)

If they get under .10 I might buy a few to give away to friends and family.

Even if the USB Erupter price falls, don't buy cause you are still making a loss!!! (unless you really calculated your ROI)

The price of USB Erupter falls like a rock. It was 2 Bitcoins each, then 1, then 0.5, now I see 0.20BTC, even 0.17 BTC. Anyone sees lower price? It is profitable to buy at this price?

No, because the difficulty goes up, so it is not profitable...  Wink

At current difficulty and the rapid rising trend, it is not profitable unless you have free electricity.

Even with free electricity they may not be profitable. (Also usually someone has to pay for that electricy, even if its not you)

As long as difficulty goes up like a rocket this will keep happening, I don't think it will be profitable to buy them at the moment.

Just take a look at this: http://bitcoindifficulty.com/
