I love the idea of having a futuristic kind of "Cred Stick" that constantly reflects your current balance, as well as different addresses, sending options, etc.

The device could also connect to WIfi or Cellphone Satellite data plans to remain online. This could make bitcoins even more convienant than using a debit/credit card, as you could walk into a shop, point your credit stick at the cash machine, and make a transfer.

Perhaps even sit down at a table, order your items, and set it on a scanner. No waitresses needed.

Unfortunately there are a ton of security flaws with this idea. But maybe someday a serious investor will come along and make it happen in a realistic manner.

I thought about pushing this idea some time ago.
Never got the time to do anything serious though, just did some checkups and the price tag for building this seemed too high at this point.

I do think this device will come, it's just a matter of time. It's a good way to boost Bitcoin's (security X usability).

Thanks for the support and the replies, everyone. This is now a thing.

I need a name for this thing. So this thread is now a competition. Suggest a name for the thing, and if I pick yours, you win the 3 BTC I have in my wallet (minus tx fee). It should have a vacant .com address.

For the record, my own suggestion is The Hard Bit, for hardware bitcoin wallet. hardbit.com is taken, though Sad

For what it's worth, I have plans of a sister project where you use a smart phone instead of a dedicated piece of hardware. Not quite as secure, but close to it.

How about a dedicated piece of hardware that works with your smartphone via bluetooth?

I like the idea, but why not look at this from an app standpoint? Or, why is the hardware so necessary to the equation?
Because security.

If you computer has a virus, you have potentially lost your money the moment you enter your wallet password. You need some trusted hardware to perform the critical step of signing your transactions.

For what it's worth, I have plans of a sister project where you use a smart phone instead of a dedicated piece of hardware. Not quite as secure, but close to it.

If you want my suggestion, don't lose your time asking for a name on a forum. Keep thinking about the design of the thing and the name will come out by its own with a bit of time.

bitcoinboard.com is not taken (as of this post)

i.e. board as in circuit board

ETA: scratch that.  no server is set up but the domain is locked

several i thought of are for sale, but who knows how much squatters will take

bitcircuit.com is available, however

as are coinflash.com and flashcoin.com

I love the idea. I personally would want dedicated hardware. However, if it's honestly about mainstreaming, taking the armory idea mobile is a good bet.

I don't disagree with this.

But I intend to be involved in the usb hardware wallet that includes a biometrics reader.

Plug it into the POS machine, confirm by swiping thumbprint. This would be awesome.

It's about mainstreaming. A physical device that the average person can use to buy things at point of sale is essential in the mainstream adoption of bitcoin. If dude makes this device that's one step closer to a keyfob for every day use...
