so we have to trawl through a load of dog shit to give the odd merit?
Egads, the horror!

I've recently done exactly this, trying to find some posts in Economics that were just "good" and it is extremely hard to find them being made by low-ranked members--and I'm trying to help that population specifically.  Unfortunately I end up giving merits to members like Hydrogen, who quotes news articles with his commentary attached.  Most of the meritable replies are made by more senior members, who seem to be the only ones who can write coherent sentences.

Once I return from my tooth-pulling dentist appointment later today I'll have another look through Economics and maybe another spam section.  Hopefully I'll get back before the laughing gas has worn off, else I may not be in the mood to read a bunch of BS much less give out merit for it.  Maybe the dentist will give me a dose to go.

Before you consider one post to be a "quality one" check if it is not copied from somewhere and the author "forgot" to mention the source.
No kidding, right?  That's a very real problem when trying to give merits to newbies in particular.

Browsing through the forum, I come across quite a number of quality posts in mega threads which goes unnoticed, and unmerited.
Could we have more presence on merit sources in those boards and threads which are just recovering from the spam attack of Tue past few months. This would encourage posters on those boards and lead to a general cleansing, and also quality posters would be rewarded, regardless where they post.

Well that's just the reality of the situation. There might be some good posts in those sorts of threads, but not every good or great post is going to get merited (especially when it's subjective). I make plenty of good posts that don't receive any merit at all but that's just how the cookie crumbles. I get plenty of merit for other posts as will any other poster, and good or great posters should probably have no trouble in ranking up quite fast, but the merit system is more to stop the worst of the worst of posters from getting anywhere and it's fairly successful in that. If you come here and post pure nonsense or just collect bounties constantly then you will get nowhere and be a permanent Newbie and that's a good thing. If you want to move up rank then you're going to have to start making worthwhile contributions but if some of your posts don't get merited then is it really such a big deal? Just keep making quality contributions and if you're a good poster then you'll get them for other posts eventually so just keep posting and the merit will come.

It's really hard to spot a quality post in those spammed threads. Most of them rephrase what others had said already making it more attractive using complex words but the meaning and context is still the same just like any others. Giving merits to those mega threads is not possible or not worth it at all.

Cant help it mate. Those who really care about their posts getting merited try to avoid the threads which become a cesspool of shitposts and post in new topics worth talking about. I mean like seriously, look at some of the posts on a mega thread in Bitcoin Discussion. They are repeating the same things over and over again. Its not worth reading after sometime.

Spam attacks? Thats something that is omnipresent in this forum.

Like I said, merit sources dont like to go to these threads and so its better off not to expect any merits to be given to them.

You're saying that many quality posts in mega threads aren't merited. I think it's fine. I don't think that posts in megatgreads should be Merited. Let's say you made quality post in 25th page of tread. It's 99% that something similar was already posted by other users in that thread. It's likely that you just will repeat what was already said.
And don't put too much pressure on Merit source. They're just volunteers and their job isn't easy. It's difficult to find quality posts amongst all these shitposts in spammy boards like Altcoin/Bitcoin discussion. Searching for quality posts would be just a waste of time. I think that we have to encourage users to stop posting in megathreads, not award them with Merits.

Sorry Ferrytale1 I don't think you saw any post won't meriting. I feel you wrote this topic just to get attention. Remember the saying, "it take one to know one". Funny to say but you're not that one became you're not actually a writer of posts which are beneficial to the forum (worth meriting).

Examples:
It all depends on your level of skill and capital.
They all are going ways to earn from cryptocurrency, you can also combine more than one at a time.
I mostly avoid pump and dump groups, I mostly avoid any scheme in which I join high up.
Once you've seen a bandwagon, it's already too late.
Exactly, there are spammers who are at higher ranks, and I think they should get the benefit of the doubt as they are fairly new.
I disagree here, if you're a fast follower and can quickly read charts from small movements, you can join the train, before it becomes a bandwagon..

Clean up yourself and improve on your post quality then you might get merited before you even think about meriting others.

And if you feel the posts you saw are worth meriting post a link Here and they will be looked into and get merited if they deserve any.

I think we need to ignore almost 90% accounts in bitcointalk, such work for nothing.

First I want to know how you determined post are quality ? I notice most of post on your profile are one line. Do you consider this kind of post for a quality post ?

I determine quality the way any other person does. If it's is constructive and helpful. I was not referring to my posts, and made no claims. I guess you're found nothing quite extraordinary there, I'm still reading and learning.

Precisely!

Firstly, if you came across a post and found it helpful, then it has completed more than halve of its intended purposes.

That's true but quality should always be rewarded. That way the deserving users can rank up easily and faster and wouldn't have to hover around a specific board.

Merit source go around (I've noticed a few), but we can't expect them to pick up everything, that's where users come in, and if you could acquire some merits, then you can reward such posters when you come across their post. Same way merited users also do. So if they keep at it they would surely get merited.
