I understand you can send a maximum 50 merits, so far I have not seen one anyone sending the maximum and I don;t know if there are people doing this the most I have seen was 20, for me above 10 is quite questionable I have seen great post here getting 5 at the most.
DdmrDdmr already explained it all, another thing is sending 50 merits in one Tx would be hard for a non-MS, either they would not have the smerits or would not consider spending it that generously (50 at once) since it would prolly leave them empty, with no replenishing happening every 30 days. So 50 in one Tx is a rarity and even when sent, it's by a MS, but since merit sources are still asking for more smerits only few will send 50 in one Tx, that's why you see it less often.

The limit is really of a maximum of 50 sMerits you can send to a given receiver per 30 days (in 1..n TXs). Logically, if you send 50 sMerits to someone for a given post, you will have reached the limit for that person in that TX alone, and will not be able to merit him until 30 days go by (you can merit others though obviously).

So far, 534 x 50 sMerit TXs have been awarded since the Merit System kicked-off. That is 0,15% of all sMerit TXs (see first table of information here:
https://public.tableau.com/views/BitcointalkMeritDashboard/PostSummary?:display_count=y&:origin=viz_share_link).

It’s rather unusual to see 50 sMerit TXs now, in relation to the earlier Merit System days. Since 01/01/2020, 38 x 50 sMerit TXs have been awarded (0,05% of all sMerit TXs since the beginning of the year ->
https://public.tableau.com/shared/4RRH5622F?:display_count=y&:origin=viz_share_link).

You can't lose your merits but can lose your sMerits if you don't spend it in 30 days if you are merit source.
You need to specify that only merit sources will experience like this but in normal users, it will never expire even though they are hoarding on it.

But this was stated when you are trying to send merit, you will see there this line, " There is no point in hoarding sMerit; keeping it yourself does not benefit you, and we reserve the right to decay unused sMerit in the future. ". The last part was not yet implemented. Which is your unused smerit will decay in the future for normal users.

Merits and smerits are 2 different things and you can't compare it.
That's right and in smerits, s stand for sendable, so it means sendable merits.

Is this true? We can lose the smerits if we dont use it during 30days period?
No, there is no decay for normal users... It's only for merit source. If you have 1 smerit now, and hold it for next 1 year, you can still send it to other users. You can try it yourself.

@Daniel91 you need to revised/updated your post soon.

Ok sorry everyone,  I made mistake and just updated my original post
I remember I read somwhere that the same rule (30 days ) for sMerits will apply for all users but obviously theymos still didn't apply such rule for everyone.
Sorry for confusion.
As merit source,  I have to spend all my sMerits in 30 days.

<…>
It looks like you missed out this poll, and the comments placed on the thread: Merit - simple poll on operational fundamentals (no wonder, it’s buried deep down by now).

Probably this applies here:
<...>The Merits that you receive cannot be sent. You send the sMerits that you have. Your Merit counter never decreases (unless you’ve been exceptionally naughty …).

It’s something like this:

- Say I start with 0 Merits (Merits 0; sMerits 0)
- I receive 1 Merit (Merits 1; sMerits 0 + there is half a virtual sMerit there, but you cannot see nor use it yet)
- I receive another Merit (Merits 2; sMerits 1)
- I receive another Merit (Merits 3; sMerits 1 + 0,5 virtual one)
- I now send 1 sMerit ((Merits 3; sMerits 0 + 0,5 virtual one), I cannot send any more yet.
- I receive another Merit (Merits 4; sMerits 1)
- and so on.

Merits: Never decreases, cannot be sent.
sMerits: decreases. For every 2 Merits received, you also get 1 sMerits to send. You can only send whole sMerit numbers (not 0,5 sMerits).

I send sMerits, the recipient receives Merits (and additionally gets sMerits to send on a ratio on 1 sMerit for every 2 Merits received).

I read this post that only merit source have expiration for smerits. But yet only a proposal I guess. Confuse too with this.
You're right, only merit sources have their smerit count replenished monthly and unused smerits from the previous month would be decayed. At this point it doesn't apply to regular users, although theymos has hinted that this could be implemented in the future if hoarding smerits becomes a bigger issue.

Just have a quick question about merit.

Say I have 100 merit, and I'm not a merit source. I would be able to send 50 merits right? When I send 50 merits away, would my merits go down from sending them?

Thanks for the replies in advance  Smiley
As explained aboved the earned merits will not perished. Except those cases before that their merits go down when the merit system revert those airdropped merits to 0 upon the implementation of merit system making those high rank go down to lower rank.

You can't lose your merits but can lose your sMerits if you don't spend it in 30 days.

There's only sMerit deadlines for merit sources , but for normal users there currently is not limit/deadline. However, it has been proposed that sMerits should decay to encourage users to spend them, but nothing has been implemented for that yet. Merit sources "pool" of merit refreshes every 30 days, and therefore they are encouraged to use up all of their sMerit within those 30 days.

But theymos said:
There is currently no decay, but if hoarding seems to become a problem, I might add it.

Merits and sMerits are 2 different things and you can't compare it.
You receive merits from others for your contribution to the forum and sMerits you get from your merits, as already explained.
You can't lose your merits but can lose your sMerits if you don't spend it in 30 days in the case you are merit source.

Start posting quality things and get 1 additional merit so you can send 1 to other users. Every 2 merit that you successfully get, you can only send 1 sMerit, meaning that every 1 merit you get is only worth 0.5 sMerit. The profit you get will not decrease because you only send it to other users in the form of sMerit and it will decrease.

If you want to read, questions like this are not important at all because you have been here almost 2 year since 2018. Sorry, I am just saying.

No, they won't go down. Read this Merit FAQ for a better understanding: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/faq-everything-you-need-to-know-about-forum-activity-account-ranks-and-merit-2766177

Thank you Smiley. I will now send merits without fear of losing my own
