But if we look at it in another way, the symbols used in the question has no value because it wasn't the same as what was given before.

Therefore there can be two answers, 14 or No answer

i agree with you 100%

i should have said "logical answer should be 14 based on assumptions and newly assigned values to "new symbols" based on the similarity to the old ones"

It's 14.

i can see how some people would get annoyed by this

I'll back you answer IF and only if the number of fruit given pertains to the value, such as:
1 apple = 10
4 bananas = 4 == 1 banana = 1
2 coconut = 2 == 1 coconut = 1

So on the given question,
We are asked to find the value of 1 apple, 3 bananas and 1 coconut which is what he said, 14

--------

But if we look at it in another way, the symbols used in the question has no value because it wasn't the same as what was given before.

Therefore there can be two answers, 14 or No answer

If the apple is equals to 10, the coconut is counted as one and so does the banana, so that makes 1 coconut, 1 apple (which is equals to 10), and 3 bananas equals to 14.

Maybe the 2 coconut sizes are different and each piece a different price.

Maybe more bananas lead to economies of scale and each banana price is less when buying 4, then when buying 3.

So I say answer cannot be determined.  Undecided

In case anybody is curious as to what happened to the missing half coconut...

GUARD #1: You've got two empty halves of coconut and your bangin'
'em together.

...

GUARD #2: It could be carried by an African swallow!
GUARD #1: Oh, yeah, an African swallow maybe, but not a European
swallow, that's my point.

... or the missing banana...

Axel Foley: What? Y'all the second team?
Detective McCabe: We're the first team.
Detective Foster: Yeah, and we're not gonna fall for a banana in the tailpipe.
