When reporting plagiarism the date and time is important for the rest it's not that big deal, i know it's nothing big to bother theit's just time consuming to write the post, the time, the author.

Without expecting any kind of changes yet with theymos allowing posts from locked threads to be quoted I think we really don't have any choice but to do the workaround. If you don't want to be bothered by replicating the looks of a quoted message I think another solution is by having a screenshot of the post you want to report and put the post's url link as the image reference, and maybe putting a note that the post cannot be quoted directly since it came from a locked thread might help people understand the format of your report.

No God or Kings, only BITCOIN.
This is what I wanted to post on Meta but busy days really caught up with me. As you can see on my latest post here: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.51430803 You can see that I quoted a locked topic in there with the exact time as well as its author though I really find it a hassle because I don't really know how to convert those unixtime, and to be honest this was the first time I encounter that word. And as I browse on all the replies here I guess I can give a simple guide now how it should be done.

Step 1:

Step 2: Be sure to put the opening tag for "quote" and the "author" of that post.

Step 3: And after you indicated the author put a space on it and indicate "link=" then paste there the link you've just copied from the author.

Step 3: After you've putted the link make sure to delete the unnecessary part in there, highlighted below.  This one is not necessary.
Code:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?

Step 4: Next in it is putting the "date=" make sure that after putting the link pasted you have to put a space on it.

Step 5: Next is the conversion of date and time go head to http://www.onlineconversion.com/unix_time.htm but make sure you remember well the exact date and time it was posted, it is available below on the link of the author's post.

Step 6: This will be the outcome, and on the middle of it you can indicate now the text of the author you want to be quoted. Just don't forget the closing tag of "quote".

By the way if you want to laid those post as evidences especially plagiarism and multi account used for abusing the forum, first thing first is to archive it.

I support your intention to build such script to quote posts inside locked topics. However, I think you can deal with nested quotes, but you can't do anything with hyperlinks (it is likely unsolvable) in posts inside locked topics. If you build such script, when finish, please post its link to my topic: List of Bitcointalk.org userscripts/ add-ons

The script could use o_e_l_e_o's trick. That should work just fine with links and everything. I'm tempted to give it a try but don't have time right now. Perhaps next week if no one else steps up.

First Exclusion Ever
The OP seems to be aware of these work arounds. The issue seems to be that the time it takes to do this over and over adds up. There doesn't seem to be any real good reason why quoting should be disabled. Perhaps any quote on a locked topic can automatically pull up a PM field with a blank recipient?

I think it has something to do with the fact that "quoting" is basically a reply (which is why it opens the "post reply" page when you click on it). And you can't reply to a locked thread. So, it was meant to work like this.

You can alredy make a quote manually (by getting the unixtime, link, author and using it in the quote format). So, Maybe I can try creating a script for this, if anyone is interested.

If admins are not allowing users to quote post from locked threads then following things can get done.

For example I want to quote any post from this thread: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/recovering-hackedlost-accounts-5089777

Then I have to enter "
Quote
"
and then

Quote from: THE LINK OF THE POST WHICH I WANT TO QUOTE
Text here, yeah absolutely here.

the output should look like this

Code:
[url=https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5089777.msg48896084#msg48896084]Quote[/url]
Text here, yeah absolutely here.

The above steps are easy to follow.

Sorry I might be missing a step here but why do you need to quote the post to report plagiarism? You can just put the link in the "report to moderator" field for the original article/post. Or is this more for when a user is asking why they were banned and you found the post?

I did find the lack of this feature a bit annoying when quoting some older posts, but remembered a workaround I'd seen actmyname use to give it a similar effect. The ones here are much easier and less time consuming I'd say.

I understand that quoting in SMF is design to reply to the into the thread, and it's logical but here now we use cross-references to different threads and maybe if you press quote to a locked post then you can access the quoted message but you are not able to post a reply.

Here is a previous discussion > https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/how-quote-post-if-topic-has-ben-lock-4144474

You forgot about the author bit? Don't you also need author= and their username?
By replacing the message ID (8 digits) from the post you want to quote, it will automatically pre-populate the correct author and timestamp. The only thing it gets wrong is that it links to the topic you are replying in, rather than the topic you took the message from, which is why step 3 is necessary to replace the topic ID in your reply.

This method will also correctly quote nested/pyramid quotes - you only need to fix the ID as above for the top level quote.

Aha! I knew I had answered this before, but I couldn't find the topic/gave up going through my post history. User shahzadafzal provided some nice screenshots to illustrate the method.

Eg if you look at your quote above, it has the author=o_e_l_e_o.
Did you even try his method? It works fine as it is written... you'll have a perfect quote that includes the author AND the correct datetime stamp... and will link back to the original post.

For instance... I just created this quote using o_e_l_e_o's method:
If you get a message similar to "your account is locked"

It's still do-able with a minor work around which will take less than 20 seconds or so.

1) Navigate to the post you want to quote and click on its title. The page will reload with that post's message number in the URL (the last 8 digits). Copy these digits, but don't close this window yet.

2) In the thread you want to post the quoted message in, click on "quote" on any post. Once that reply page loads, paste your copied 8 digits over the 8 digits in the URL after "quote=". Hit enter to reload your reply page with the locked post quoted.

3) Go back to the window from step 1 containing the message you want to quote. Copy the 7 digits after "topic=". Go back to the window from step 2 containing your new reply, and paste these 7 digits over the 7 digits after "link=topic=" on the top line of your reply. This is to ensure the quote links back to the correct thread if someone clicks on it.

I understood what you meant. By now, we are unable to directly quote posts in locked topics, and it is truly inconvenience.
However, in the meantime, we have a subsitute for it, that is not perfect, but we can use it.
Methods:
- Using quote block
- Adding link to posts that we want to quote
For example:
This topic: Recovering hacked/lost accounts is locked, but if I want to quote the OP, or just part of it, applying this code (typing author=link to post you want to quote). Official guide is there: SMF Bulletin Board Code
Code:
[quote author=author]quote[/quote]
Code:
[quote author=https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/recovering-hackedlost-accounts-5089777]
If your account was hacked

Email [email protected], ideally from the account's email address. Include your username and a brief description of the details of how/when the account was hacked. A signature will likely be required (see below).
[/quote]
Result:
If your account was hacked

Email [email protected], ideally from the account's email address. Include your username and a brief description of the details of how/when the account was hacked. A signature will likely be required (see below).
That's it.

Unfortunately, this method has its own disadvantages:
- Time is not be shown
- Problems occur with nested/ pyramid quotes;
- Unable to see hyperlinks;

I don't know why we are not able to directly quote posts in locked topics, maybe it is limitations of SMFs.

What is the reason behind this? Why I cannot quote a post from already locked topic?
In order to proof linked accounts, for me is very easy just to quote the two/few posts I want to refer to but instead, now I copy and paste it and add link to the message.
Sometimes some links to the posted pictures are wrong and it's very easy to see when you quote it and correct it but with the locked topics is so much work to get to those links, just waste of time.

So, can we just be able to Quote the posts in the locked topicss just to use those as reference?
