That's a huge ask! Abandoning windows for Linux because of a potential hack???
And not forgetting that your favorite old apps will not be coming with you and if you are a gamer doesn't this mean quitting your hobby of gaming  Cry

If someone can't afford to pay for a licensed Windows, then he/she probably doesn't have very important things in the computer too.
To Windows fans or anyone else that can't afford a paid Windows and a paid AV, I would recommend to make full backups, periodically.

5. good for developers
I bet this category is already using Linux, and even on Windows won't get any ransomware infection either.

There are lots of us being victim with this ransomware and exploits
the most popular one is encrypting our files, and asking for payments mostly victims are windows users
i am not attacking windows and promoting linux flavors, but giving advice for safety reasons

Since January windows 7 ended supports for its users making this vulnerable for attacks
my suggestion for those who wants license but can't afford for one , is to switch from windows to linux

there are lots of flavors for linux which you can use and since it has also became user friendly over the years they are now lots of desktops
    • Ubuntu

    • Linux Mint Cinnamon

    • Zorin OS

    • Elementary OS

    • Linux Mint Mate

    • Monjaro Linux

Why i am suggesting this instead of windows?
This OS are faster and not resources grabber or eating lots of resources
Also since they are not windows, they are not prone to virus, but you also need extra care ofcourse there are some virus
although those people don't actually spend more time making for linux, because they are focus on windows
What about softwares they have counterparts in linux every softwares office, and other application
Ive been using ubuntu , CentOS for work , but never got a problem, using it for years now
you can also play games tried it in ubuntu myself
so for those who are wondering try linux ,

    advantages are:
    1. No license
    2. Free other softwares
    3. Faster
    4. Maximize hardware capability
    5. good for developers
    6. can be use as server , firewall, etc
    7. Much better dealing with virus attacks and ransomware

On the other hand we have some disadvantages
    1. since your a windows user will find it in the start hard to use but will get use to it

Again this is just to help us , on minimize risk of attacks, also free licenses since we have issue buying one sometimes , and exploring other OS
also if you worry about wallets you can also install it in this , if you want my suggestion you should try ubuntu first
so thank you and i hope i help everyone photo taken from itsfoss.com/best-linux-beginners
