Am beginning to hate the fact that the media always finds way to misrepresent bitcoin why should they always feel the reason to relate bitcoin to only the negative things people can do with it.

Well that is Bias media for you some of them are really controlled by the government that hates bitcoin so much they are using resources to keep the reports out that is about negativity only towards bitcoin, and not only that this Ransomware or cyber attackers are hacking peoples desktop from homes or corporate ones that involve bitcoin into giving them the amount they want in this case when this kind of activity initiates bitcoin price will plunges down, then when people would heard of the stories they will eventually go to a panic mode to sell their bitcoin, I think some actions needs to apply to take out this kind of hackers from what they are doing, but as a fellow bitcoin enthusiast what is the kind of action that we can do?

There are a lot of good actions and philanthropy happening with bitcoin, but mainstream media always choose to ignore this and only report on malware, ransomware and whatever other criminal activities that are requesting bitcoin payments.

Hopefully in the future they catch up with these positive news but I think they will not bother. They will keep reporting on ransomware attacks that only take like a couple BTCs worth of victims since people don't even bother with paying. It's way more clickbaity creating news about ransomware rather than reporting on how much BTC was donated for charity causes.

Thats, true, Bitcoins can be used by criminals and governments cannot control any illegal activities due to its anonymity, which is quite a heated debate in the Bitcoin community to whether countries should accept them. All things have pros and cons. Smiley

I hope that this will stop soon, hackers are getting better with new ways to get money out of their victims, especially when everyone is using the Internet now. Stay Online-safe!

It started in Ukraine. A new ransomware struck computers and soon spread internationally. It cripples computers and digital operating system by taking control of them and demanding digital ransom from their owners to regain access to it. Guess what the digital ransom is?

It is Bitcoin! These hackers are using Bitcoin pseudo-anonymity to terrorise households. This is an international phenomenon and many security agencies have their eyes on Bitcoin. I think that hacks that occur remotely in the cyber world and demands ransom, will continue to ask Bitcoin as the ransom. Bitcoin is the perfect tool for such crime. What do you guys think?

this has been going on for years without you even knowing it just because they weren't using bitcoin. but ever since they started doing that, you also found out about ransomware!

the first one is actually dating back to 1989 and bitcoin was introduced 2008 and became really popular in 2010-2011
they have been using a lot of different methods to get the "ransom" and the newest one is bitcoin. and soon they will move on to one of the anon coins.

I too got this news, where once again a cyber attack has taken place and the demand is in terms of bitcoin. Probably once again bitcoin gains some popularity as well some negativity. Ransomware attack have been taking place often, this surely alerts every sector to be careful with their security features. Hope this don't disturb our network.

As sad as it may sound and people are going to attempt to go after Bitcoin for something like this, there are many other mediums that the ransom ware hackers could be using in order to steal money from people. It does make us look bad that it's Bitcoin, but they could've used Prepaid cards / Moneygram / Wire transfers and so on and so forth to be able to steal money from people. Money Dot cards are also one of the big ones when it comes to something like this as well, I think those are PERFECT as well.I think it's sad that this is happening, though it's bound to happen with any currency.

For such crimes, the bitcoin is really better suited because of its anonymity, but in times when bitcoin have not had a ransomware virus already existed and hackers quietly received the ransom dollars. This is not a problem for extortion.

And I hope everyone also thinks that way but it is not. What they hear is what they get. What they see is what they get. That is especially when they have noe knowlesge regarding this digital currencies and they came to know it in a unpleasant way which will really leave a bad impression. Well, just hoping people and governments would be open minded and think outside the box.

this is a bad for bitcoin because people in out there will know that bitcoin is only used for bad thing and people is not considering about the benefits. we know that with anonymous, bitcoin can be used for many things and the hackers is using bitcoin as ransom so its not good for bitcoin itself for future. but i am sure that if we can show and give benefits about bitcoin to many people, i believe that people will thinking that bitcoin is have two side, for positive or negative purpose, and i am sure they will used bitcoin for good thing.

This is bad for the reputation of bitcoins. Almost every time the public heard now about bitcoins, it's related to some tragedies.
First wannacry and now this.

In addition to that articles everywhere on the internet which say that the only purpose of crypto is to be used in shady stuff ( adding that it's widely used in deep web).

If I imagine myself as a normal citizen who knows nothing about crypto, I'd really off and totally unready to do anything related to it.
That's bad Sad

This is another case where Bitcoin is put in the bad light again, and another attack like this could happen anytime unless we trace who are the culprit and how these costly anti virus can counter such attacks in computers and networks

yes, recently these attacks have been increasing first wannacry and petya or something like that and its kind of worrying me, because if every ransomware would start accepting ransom in bitcoin , becuase of its nature and then its a bad publicity for bitcoin and it may raise a red flag and make governments to make the bitcoins as illegal .
