You may also like the "Total war" series. It is strategy play at your own pace as you build your empire. When you go to war the game opens a battle map with hundreds of characters fighting epic battles.

They have versions that include armies from Rome to Napoleon. It's really good. The video below shows some of the strategy and battle maps from the Napoleon version. The newest version is "Attila", but You may want to buy a used copy of an earlier version. They all have similar gameplay.
There is also a very active mod community. You can DL versions from the Boer war to Lord of the rings.

Although they're both kinda old now, Age of Empire II and Dune were a couple games (similar to C&C) I had a lot of fun playing. CivIII was sort of the same, but turn based. (I think it's at version 5 now.) I haven't played any of the other games mentioned, but Starcraft (2) is extremely popular and is supposed to be quite amazing.

Oh I totally remember Metal Fatigue, very interesting game, it also had layers, underground and air Cheesy

Yes lol. Underground didn't allow robots but on air platforms you could send robots if they could fly, build solar panels for more energy and the cannons to bombard the enemies on the ground at greater ranges xD

An old game like red alert I liked was metal fatigue.
You had to build bases and units as usual lol but you had giant robots too. xD You had to research new body parts for them and in combat could take parts from enemies and use them directly on your bots or take them to your base and research them.

A more recent game like red alert I played was company of heroes. It's different because of the resources but still fun to play.

http://www.openra.net/ - Also containes Dune 2000 and the original command and conquer, all set up for modern computers so you don't have to do any ridiculous tweaking to get it all to work.

This is amazing!! I used to spend hours on Dune. I might have to fire this up for nostalgic sake.

Somewhere I have a bunch of mods I made for Red Alert back years ago. I wasted a lot of hours dialing-up my friends for a game.

Supreme Commander is a good strategy game, it's more heavy on the base building, and more large scale battles. Lot to learn about it though, how to setup patrols, rally points, how to use transports effectively, templates, etc. Fun game though.

Starcraft 2 is good too.

I was searching around for a way to get Red Alert 1 and C&C 1 back so I know how you feel Cheesy unfortunately though a lot of the developers now have abandoned base building in the RTS genres in favour of this MOBA bullshit we keep seeing everywhere.
