Baumgartner reached a maximum speed of 833.9 mph during his jump Sunday over the New Mexico desert.  That amounts to Mach 1.24

...that's not even as wild as what the old timer coaching him in used to do...

I like to call him Colonel Joseph Kittinger, The former high altitude free-fall record holder.   Grin

Edit: Joe still holds the freefall duration record.  Felix went much too fast to get that one!  Smiley

That's some pretty wild stuff. Amazingly, that's not even as wild as what the old timer coaching him in used to do.

The old guy used to shoot jack rabbits out in the new mexico desert with a 50 cal, FROM A JET! This may not sound so crazy until you realize that in order to do this you need to get so close to the deck that the bullets could ricochet off the ground and come back to hit the aircraft, which happened.

Its like some weird hunter s thompson version of Top Gun.

That was freaking awesome.  Still wondering how they tailored that suit to fit those gigantic brass testicles.  Me, I can't even look out the window when I'm on a plane. there are parts of the video of this jump that make me almost hurl. I can't even imagine jumping out of a tin can from the edge of space.

I love the part when the door opened and you could see the frost fly away from the top of the door and and the beautiful blue sky emerging to welcome him.  Smiley

He's back down on earth, and on top of the world Cool

The press conference after his landing confirmed that Felix Baumgartner did indeed break the speed of sound during his stratospheric free fall. Google News has all the scoop.

And I will see my dream come alive at last
I will touch the sky
And they're not gonna hold me down no more
No they're not gonna change my mind

'Cause I've got faith of the heart
I'm going where my heart will take me
I've got faith to believe
I can do anything
I've got strength of the soul
And no one's gonna bend or break me
I can reach any star
I've got faith, I’ve got faith, faith of the heart

He's still within the atmosphere, just very high up and near the very end of the clip you can see a few cans on the table infront of his family.
