I admire you for pursuing something that you so believe in even up to the extent of giving up your PhD. In the end it's nothing more satisfying that doing the things you like most.... something that you have passion and interest in doing it.

That is awesome news, i agree with you its pointless to create an alt coin, all the previous ones have ended up eventually transferring value back to bitcoin.

This is a very good news, of-course the better news will be when they actually do integrate it. Reddit imho is a better social media than any other and if they do this it will increase BTCitcoin adoption as the concept will reach genuine audience.

Competing with bitcoin wouldn't make any sense. Rather than compete, we want to build on and with the bitcoin community. We will not create a currency that competes with bitcoin. Instead, we will leverage the blockchain (The Blockchain, i.e., the bitcoin blockchain), and quite possibly also sidechains, in order to build our technology.
We are not making an altcoin. We are not making an altcoin. We are not making an altcoin. >>

I am going to preserve this quote. The more I look at alts, the more I despise them. It would indeed be much better for folks to build and expand upon the bitcoin technology as it is. I was pleased that reddit decided not to build yet another shitty clone coin.

Also, for those of you using changetip on reddit, here is a post on how to make an easy macro for quick tipping. http://redd.it/2lhsna

Ryan X. Charles, Reddit's new Cryptocurrency Engineer

It's definitely long-term. Bitcoin technology will ultimately become integral to reddit. We've had some internal brainstorming about ways we could integrate - the possibilities are enormous.

Ryan X. Charles (/u/ryancarnated), cryptocurrency engineer

I discovered bitcoin on May 13, 2011 and never recovered. After developing a reputation as the bitcoin guy at the physics department, I eventually quit my physics PhD program and went full-time bitcoin. I worked for the best bitcoin company in the world, BitPay, but couldn't pass up an opportunity to bring bitcoin to millions of reddit users. I'm working on reddit's digital asset, as well as general purpose bitcoin infrastructure to enable things like micropayments and contracts. My favorite things are elliptic curves, hash functions, and Merkle trees. My favorite subreddits are /r/bitcoin, /r/sloths and /r/earthporn. If I had written bitcoin, it would have been in javascript.
