The "report to moderator button" is a TOOL for users. Of course, it depends on why are you here in the forum. If you are a compromised user, if you enjoy the forum and all the information you can find it here for FREE, then you enjoy the "Report to moderator" button, for it gives you the opportunity of making a collaboration in cleaning the forum.
So, this button is a privilege, if you look at it from this point of view.
Of course, if your only goal in the forum is earning some money instead of making a contribution, you will write such a kind of threads, looking for compensation for anything you contribute with. But the compensation is all the information you can get in here. It should be more than enough!!!

There are a lot of posts, which are not useful or wrong information or one words post. These type posts are spam and they are increasing the no. of post only nothing valuable addition.

For this, There is an option in every post "report to the moderator", So we should report to moderator, that will help in reducing the spam post. So this is my humble request to all member that report to the moderator if you find spam post.

In my opinion, if we give some rewards to the member, who do such work, then it will encourage the member to do. By this way, we can reduce the existing spam post and discourage the spam writer in future.
Really mate, not to brag, but I have 100% report accuracy and have reported almost 20 posts (ik it's not that much)

But I don't do it for rewards, I do it to keep this forum clean against spammers

It's voluntary to report to the mods, they are not forcing you to report, unless you feel that it's breaking the rules

Why don't just ban those users for spamming
Then mods will need to spend more time to detect it and to deal with it...

if my memory doesn't fails me; a banned account could get an evil IP and it won't be able to post until that banned user pays.
It isn't that hard nor expensive to pay few cents for vpn/tor generated account tho.

imagine me
It's been suggested many times, and it's not a bad idea in principle, but in practice it would create a perverse incentive where people would want more reportable posts so that they could get more rewards. Almost certainly, some people would start spamming on alts just so that they could report the spam on another account and get rewarded. There are a few things that could be done to impede this sort of behavior, but on the whole it'd be too difficult to detect abuse and not worthwhile. So there will almost certainly never be any real reward for reporting, though some purely cosmetic things are not impossible.

I think it would be beneficial because reporting is an utterly thankless task
An update on the top 50 reporters list would be nice, to give bragging rights Wink Seeing that list is what made me realize I can report much more posts than I did, and for months now I've been reporting more than I post.
Exists (https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.21740582).
Thanks, that is the link I meant, but I found and posted an older link. I was not in the top 50 in September 2017, where #50 has 606 reports. That means I've made around 80% or more of my reports in the last 8 months.

I agree. a simple custom title perk might stir people interest to help tidying up the forum
but as theymos said, giving real reward would create more problems than solve the current ones
I hope he would consider the 'custom title' perk suggestion as possible reward Wink
It could actually lead to a huge increase in "easy reports": go to the altcoin or off-topic board, report 1000 posts, and get perks. Even though it's just 1000 out of millions of bad posts, getting posts deleted gives spammers the idea they don't get away with it all the time.

I wouldn't be against some perks for those that report a lot.
The perks are a cleaner forum Cheesy

But the forum isn't clean when barely anyone is reporting and a duplicate thread asking a dumb question or even breaks the rules is still there days later and on its tenth page of spam.

It's been suggested many times, and it's not a bad idea in principle, but in practice it would create a perverse incentive where people would want more reportable posts so that they could get more rewards. I think it would be inevitable that it would be abused in some capacity especially if there was a cash reward or something, but everything here is abused: merits, trust, ranks etc. I think it would be fairly easy for staff to spot mass abuse though. Anyone who cares about their account here wouldn't risk it so you could always limit it to certain ranks to stop people using bots and throwaways.

why Administrator/Global Moderator in that list? Do they also report? Huh

You have to have a lot of reports to become a mod in the first place, but you keep reporting when you're staff on boards that are out of your jurisdiction. Globals/Admins don't need to report as they don't need to but they'll still be on the list of top reporters because of the sheer volume of reports and it'll take a while for others to catch up.

Yes mate, very good suggestion. I am thinking if I should hit the report to the moderator for this post  Grin
Cheesy Grin Tongue

... and then the abusers start working with two type of bots instead of one , one for spamming the other for reporting, perfectly working system, ico bumping, developing accounts for sale and getting rewards for reporting at the same time. The best reward can be the report rate listed under merit score.
that's exactly what immediately crossed my mind after I read OP post, another way to abuse forum
as long as the reward is trivial or simple perk then it's fine I guess

Maybe an additional rank could be achieved after so many reports or maybe even a prize for those that report the most. I'm sure some nice perks could be thought up/given to encourage users to keep on reporting.
A custom title or something would be a cool perk. Or just a "top reporter" note in the profile.
I'm not reporting for a prize, I just really hate spam.

Who's going to pay you, MOD? How much do you pay Mods for using this forum? Did MOD generate income from bitcointalk users?
if you want to report spammers go ahead you're welcome, but don't ask for payment.

That's wrong. When a posts/thread gets deleted, all reports of the post are marked as good.
I had a feeling this was the case, but just couldn't find any information on it when I searched it up. It's good to know though. I'm guessing that this would apply to nuked accounts too? Also, banned accounts without the users posts being deleted would likely be handled manually as the posts still exist if the above is true.

Goodbye, Z.
I'm also going to go out on a whim here, and assume that posts which have been reported, but the thread is removed will be seen as unhandled. I might be wrong here.
That's wrong. When a posts/thread gets deleted, all reports of the post are marked as good.

True, but AFAIK that doesn't mean they aren't being looked at. It might just mean that the moderator was unable to determine whether the report was good or bad and left it.
Unhandled can also be used when a moderator doesn't choose to act on a report, but doesn't want to influence the accuracy of the reporter in any way.
Since unhandled reports are ignored for accuracy calculations, they could be seen as "dismissed".

Rewarding the report maybe (with merit) is very dangerous, knowing the nature of the human race some people could create 50 fake accounts to spam and report with the main account to "abuse".

Besides the abuse; This isn't what merit should be given for. Merit is for good quality posts, and shouldn't be rewarded for any other reason other than that. Personally, I don't think there needs to be a reward, and that shows in the stats. People are reporting (some in large quantities) and will continue to do so for a better forum.

The list of top 50 reporters also mentions the number of unhandled posts.
This may not be due to paucity of moderators, but it will definitely increase if people are given incentives to start reporting posts.
True, but AFAIK that doesn't mean they aren't being looked at. It might just mean that the moderator was unable to determine whether the report was good or bad and left it. I imagine quite a few people aren't being very descriptive on why they are reporting a post.
