I know that it is possible to get work with Ubuntu-based systems, but you need some extra work to get it done.

Does this only work with that custom OS put on the SD card?

Or can that be installed onto an existing raspbian setup aswell somehow? (already have a pi with cgminer running on it)

I visited Cryptouniverse in Vienna, Austria and we made few tutorial videos in co-operation to support the AvalonMiner documentation.

Thomas and Stefan were great guys and I was so happy that I was able to visit them.

Here's the video where I talk through how to disassemble a A741 unit.  Smiley

Also rest of the AvalonMiner tutorial videos can be found at Cryptouniverse's Youtube channel.

I think it is a good offer and Cryptouniverse is an official distributor for Canaan Creative hardware, they are trustworthy.

A741 is a EOL product (end-of-life). No new units are going to be sold anymore.
You can only search for used units.

Thank you for the very good walkthrough!
I would like to ask what do you think about the used items that cryptouniverse is now selling.

I am planning to use them in a location with very low energy cost

This review is now updated in February 18, 2018 and there is a nicely formatted version of this review/guide available for download.  Smiley

This will most likely be the final update for this review/guide, as AvalonMiner 741 is an EOL (end of life) product now.

Great review! Very helpful and comprehensive.

I've read a few threads about cleaning the 741 and it doesn't seem to be all that hard, but I was curious if you have any extra tips for care/maintenance?

One word: compressed air.

Do not vacuum it, because of the risk for static electricity.

Great, thanks again.

Will blowing some air on intake/outtake have much of an effect or should I just sack up and disassemble entirely for cleaning?

Please remove the fan first, and I would also remove the 'honeycomb' grill too to allow more space for cleaning through the unit with compressed air.

I will give it a go and report back! much appreciated

Went ahead and cleaned mine for the first time since it started running (almost 40 days). Removing 8 screws is not that time consuming and I had it back online before the next block on slush Smiley

thanks again for the review

Isn’t that Two words?

Yes.

Should have said that in Finnish as it is only one word, paineilma.  Grin

Exhaust fan. We tested shrouds but this requires removing the stock fan.
