With every transaction a small amout of Ripple is destroyed so its value should increase over time. However I feel it's overpriced at the moment.

Ripple is centralized coin so I know some people will not let me to get money with ripple as it is centralized and I think it may not be profitable in the long term. Is ripple coins are required to increase in value as time goes on?

it is worth to invest in XRP but not Ripple, they are of different path, Ripple is used for banks and XRP for trading and investing but the drawback here is you have to wait 1 to 3 years of holding your investment to have really big significant gain, it is not recommended for short term investment. if you have extra money that your can save and forget then Ripple is good but for revolving funds this not so attractive.

Just read a little bit about ripple currency
it is not really a "currency"!

and its working mechanism seems to be a little different than bitcoin. Seems like an interesting concept. However, the company will hold 50% of its 100 billion ripplies.
there are lots of interesting "mechanisms" out there but simply being different doesn't make the better investments.

Does it mean that the currency will if not appreciate as much as bitcoin, there are still chances that it might appreciate in the coming months and years?
there is no way in a million years that ripple appreciates as much as bitcoin! it is a very simple concept called supply and demand it is a 21 million bitcoins versus 100,000 million (100 billion) ripple supply.
at the same time it is a growing demand for bitcoin versus 0 demand for ripple

If so, is it worthwhile to invest in it for longer term?
not at all.
even if we ignore the huge supply, this coin is currently in a huge bubble and it has been falling slowly down back to 900 satoshi range.

lol by currency I meant crypto-currency ...

what about the banks backing it up? does it mean nothing?

Ripple is nothing. No benefit of investing in ripple. The price is slowly and up and down. It is better to invest in BTC , eth or waves. Those three coins have good margin price because as traders pump and dump coin with high margin will make a lot of profit. Holding ripple for long time will earn little profit because jumping on the price just lite.

I don't get it why they consider ripple as a crypto project. Might as well invest in applepay or paypal. And yes, they hold majority of the currency and they can do what ever they want with it. And that's very unappealing to me.

Hi people...  Smiley

Just read a little bit about ripple currency and its working mechanism seems to be a little different than bitcoin. Seems like an interesting concept. However, the company will hold 50% of its 100 billion ripplies.

PS. I hope we can store ripples in paper wallets as well?
