Maker DAO Network Analysis: Dissecting Crypto’s Hottest Stablecoin

Transactions

Let’s begin with a basic overview of the MKR network:

    Lifetime total of MKR transactions: 83264
    Lifetime total of addresses that ever touched MKR: 7513
    # of current MKR holders: 5235

If we further break down those 7513 addresses by the # of completed MKR transactions, we get the following spread:

    1 trx: 1758 addresses (23.4%)
    2 trx: 2102 addresses (28.0%)
    3 – 5 trx: 1513 addresses (20.1%)
    5 – 10 trx: 1124 addresses (15.0%)
    >= 10 trs: 1016 addresses (13.5%)

That said, we believe the above graphs indicate that the bulk of the DAI isn’t currently being purchased via CDPs – but rather on exchanges.

This stands to reason, as the lack of an intuitive UI for smart contracts still presents a significant barrier to entry for the less tech-savvy market participants. For many, the easiest way to acquire DAI remains circumventing the CDPs entirely, and turning to the exchanges instead.

This hypothesis is also consistent with the presented trx volumes. What it means for the widespread adoption of the proposed MakerDAO system, remains to be seen.

Note: We reached out to the MakerDAO team for comments and clarifications prior to the publication of this analysis, but have not heard back as of yet. If or when they respond, we’ll be happy to add their comments to the article accordingly.

We continue to work on importing new blockchains. We’re also working on real-time signals, and collaborating with a growing team of data analysts and researchers who are helping to develop machine learning algorithms for more sophisticated social analyses.

But even the Roadmap is pretty high-level, so let’s call out a couple features we’re particularly charged about:

Top Token Transactions

Now you can look up any token on SANbase and see the most recent top transactions for the token – just search for the token and scroll to the bottom of its detail page to find the list.

Our Top Tokens list is unique in that:

    It automatically shows the top transactions only. No need to filter.
    It’s clearly marked if an exchange address is involved.
    We now have one of the largest… if not *the* largest… database of exchange addresses out there (more than Etherscan’s).

As a bonus on our SAN token page, we’ve included our top ETH transactions from team wallets as well (if you’re interested 🙂

ERC20 Tokens: “ETH Spent”

This feature became hot late this past summer, when “ICO projects dumping ETH” became somewhat of a meme as ETH’s price suffered sharp declines. We’ve been tracking this metric for awhile, but it definitely saw increased attention over the last few months and could still be of interest during a project’s lifecycle.

Eyeing “High Orbit”

These new features execute on the vision we’ve had from the beginning – bring clarity to crypto, and cut through the noise. From here, we can clearly see the path to our “High Orbit” set for 2019.

We’ve long believed the only way you can get a true picture of what’s going on in the crypto world is by looking at many aspects at once… not only on-chain data, or only social trends.

Until now people have needed to look everywhere, in many places, to find all of these metrics. We aim to be the first platform to provide meaningful, reliable and actionable sets of data/metrics on the complete “behavior elephant“: on-chain + social + traditional trading data.

Introducing Social Trends – New Tool for Crypto Social Insights
Not all chatter is created equal, however. To filter out the noise and only present relevant results, we focused on channels where at least 90% of all discussions center on crypto. This includes:

    Over 300 different Telegram channels (not tracked by google or any other search engine)
    Crypto subreddits
    Discord channels (not tracked by google or any other search engine)
    BitcoinTalk
    Private trader chats hidden from Google search
    … and more to be added!

To further specify your searches, you can use a variety of modifiers including OR, AND, and parentheses (). For example:

    btc moon – will search for that exact phrase.
    btc AND moon – will search for messages where both words appear, regardless if they’re next to each other or not.
    btc OR moon – will search for messages where either word appears.
    (btc OR bitcoin) AND moon – will search for messages where moon appears either with btc or Bitcoin

(P.S. this graph includes a small ‘hack’ – the results are usually plotted against the price of either BTC or ETH, but you can in fact plot the price of any coin in our database. All you need to do is add ‘?asset=coin_name_in_our_database’ to the result url and voila! As you can see in the example above, we simply added ‘asset=maker’ to plot the social results directly against the price of MakerDAO.)

Our DAA and Dev Activity data – now free!

For the first time, we are making all historical data for Daily Active Addresses (DAA) and Dev activity available for free, for every ERC-20 project listed on SANbase as well as via our API.
To our knowledge, this is the most comprehensive set of data for these two metrics currently on the market.

You can access the data by visiting Sanbase, and selecting any token. Devs and those that would like to contribute to our platform- find out how you can take advantage of our API here.

What these charts demonstrate is that there appears to be strong correlation between the price of the token and DAA.

A token economy is born… SAN staking is now live!
Plus we have a few more updates to share (developers, researchers and data scientists, we’re looking at you in particular). But first, let’s talk about what nearly everyone has been asking us since SAN was minted on July 4, 2017 — when can I actually use my SAN, and what for?

Well, the wait is over. Now you can log into SANbase and check out our first experiments (“beta” status, we’re still trying out ideas) in blockchain integrations that require SAN staking to use:

New Sentiment data feed:
Visit any token’s detail page and you’ll see a Sentiment metric that you can plot against price. This metric is based on an aggregation of sentiment measurements for the crypto market in general, and currently requires a stake of at least 1000 SAN to access.
