Alright, I like the handshake icons a lot. That might be a more friendly icon than the nuke icon. Shaking hands could represent a few things too such as saying thanks, but also helping each other out. Nice one BTCforJoe.
Got a couple more ideas for icons. Colors can be changed, obviously.

It's hard trying to choose a graphic or icon type to use to depict reporting. I do like the chevrons, but I'm not a fan of using such military-based images. The hats and detective idea is good. And I do like the lightning bolts. But everything else to me is kind of "meh", imo.

If you hadn't said that that was a police hat, I wouldn't have known what it was. Unfortunately, it's hard to depict an object with that much detail within 16 pixels.

Regarding the counter issue, you could solve it by creating a 'title' tag with the amount of valid reports that were made. The number of results can be displayed when rolling over the icon, such as in the following mockup:

Your image, idea of showing badge this way is great, it makes more sense to choose best one. But to be fair badge isn't good one, it's very simple and colour doesn't suit forum's template too.
I'll try to find some good ones today or tomorrow...

Agreed!!!! Another one of those achievements you can have and be proud of here in the forum. Having that badge and showing off you are contributing in the forum by cleaning up some worthless garbage is some of the goals you can have here, the big benefactors here are the ones who have already been cleaning and reporting posts even without this kind of appreciation to begin with.
Yeah, it's pretty amazing to see a community pull together, and actively dedicate hours of their time to report. I'm a big fan of rewarding these select few that have dedicated their time, and I think a badge is probably the best way to go about it.

That would be funny as hell, but I'm not sure it would get people to report more posts which I think is Theymos's point here. It'd be even funnier if a rat king image was used for maybe the top 10% of reporters.Anyway, this is a badge I'd proudly wear, but I report posts basically because it lets me feel like I've done something concrete about the spam problem. It matters less to me that something may or may not get done with my reports. Doing something is usually better than doing nothing, and I think more people should be reporting shitposters and assorted rule-breakers. If it takes a badge to motivate them, go for it.

Let's pretend for a second that most users are rational people and are not delusional and they will see it as a fun/silly badge on a forum. Let's not assume that most people are radical and would view this as promoting violence , seriously give your head a shake...
All I know is that if there is a badge for reporting posts, I will spend my days off hunting the fourm until I get the top badge

+ is also universal symbol of help, aiding like the red cross.
I'm also going to give the best design my last 6 sMerits.
There is no need to tie the reporting to nuke bombs, we don't want to promote violence, we want to spread the peace and spirit of helping the moderators.

Well personally I do not want to see mushroom cloud nor nuke bomb, and I think that a certain percentage of forum members do not like them as well. Stars, hats or medals look better to me. Will give it a try to create ones.
Here are some of my additional suggestions. If you guys don't like Stars, then how about medals?

I like the military chevrons. Maybe instead of the same but different colours you could just get an additional chevron each time you move up a rank like I believe they do in the military. Ie one chevron for 300 good reports, two chevrons for 1000 etc. More could easily be added as needed as well.

Maybe give badges out for very high amounts of merit as well. I mentioned in another thread today that maybe some sort of additional demi-rank or other such title or badge could be given to people who earn large amounts of merit. 1000, 2000, 4000 etc. I think people who contribute a lot of meritable posts should stand out from the rest or be rewarded in such fashion.
I suggest getting a Holmes badge when you reach a certain number "300 report", then changing the color every level.
