wait, what's the point of this thread? are you saying if you have annoying neighbors, you can get them to stop being annoying by giving them bitcoins? i don't understand the original point of the thread..

The OP was trying to show a use of micropayments being given to neighbors via bitcoin in exchange for being quiet

Maybe use the BTC to grease the palm of the cops to hang around the neighborhood at times when those people who drive around with their stereos blasting are at their worst?

So, you are suggesting the Bitcoin be used for illegal activity?

Jesus.

How about you buy a pair of earplugs?

I was being facetious, but I can tell you from experience that earplugs don't always help and are annoying. Sometimes slapping people with fines for breaking noise codes is the only way to get them to notice.

Then just call the cops and leave Bitcoin out of it.

Jesus.

Calling the cops can be very dangerous these days, since too often they show up ready to (literally) shoot just about anyone.

Sometimes you have neighborhoods that do unwanted noises. Could be musical instrument they are trying to learn, DIY constructions or pure noise. Maybe they could have address for tips for less noise.

How does it sound? Similar ideas?

It sounds like you are essentially paying them to not exercise their right to free speech.

If people are making a lot of noise at late hours of the night you should simply ask them to quiet down and they most likely will make less noise.

I do like the idea of giving people an incentive to meet certain standards via bitcoin, just not when "speech" is involved.
People seem to get confused when it comes to 'the right to free speech.' That right is the right not to have the government makes laws restricting your speech. As a private citizen I can try to stifle your speech all I want.

Short of being arrested for assault, I assume. But I like to put this in slightly different terms. The right to free speech doesn't give you the right to yell "Fire!" in a crowded theater unless there really is a fire. It also doesn't give you the right to go out of your way to be offensive. Stick a rubber penis on your forehead and call it art if you want, but that doesn't mean you won't be arrested for public indecency. And then there's the whole Westboro Baptist Church thing. These guys don't even seem to realize that somebody's going to start a brawl with them eventually.

Not that I endorse the OPs very abusable idea.

Maybe use the BTC to grease the palm of the cops to hang around the neighborhood at times when those people who drive around with their stereos blasting are at their worst? And then those of us who know to follow noise ordinance codes can get a percentage of fines collected.

I have lived in a duplex, but have been fortunate to never live in a large apartment building.
Sending coins for neighborhoods to be more silent?
At first they might feel threatened by the idea, depending on which media stories they have seen/heard about Bitcoin. Certainly, they will get the message that their noise is too loud.

How would that work please be quiet I'll tip you 5 dollars
Then the next day they will do it again to earn 5 bucks

Seems to be a bit off for me, might want to try installing sound proof buffers in your house or a quiet room
Anyways its summer its noisy since there is only 3 to 4 months before cooping up in the house again for Winter lol.

That said I like Franky's noise premium fee, but it should be refundable every month if no issues arise.

I think this would set a very bad free speech precident

I think you should move if you don't like the noise.

Or talk to the neighbor about it. And if they refuse... start recording it, and initiate a legal action to request injunctions against their noisy activity, sue for damages or to seek a noise abatement order against the neighbor.

In most states, the neighbor could be liable from $50 to $100 a day. Much more, if it causes medical/psychological issues, or if it affects the value of your property or interferes with  your ability to rent or sell..

You'll need to be able to prove  using recordings, police reports, and your witness testimony that
* The noise is excessive and disturbing, and
* The neighbor is creating the noise (or e.g. is the landlord and therefore, responsible), and,
* Your enjoyment of your space is affected, and
* You verifiably asked the neighbor to stop the noise on multiple occasions, and they had refused or continued to make the noise.

I think the neighbor has free speech rights in this situation.

If you simply ask them politely to quiet down a little bit then they will probably quiet down.

Gone are the days when you walk up to your neighbor and let them know what's on your mind.

Well, yeah, you can get shot doing that shit these days!

Guys if you don't want to discuss the ops idea why comment at all?

I hate noise pollution and guess I understand his point too well although playing instruments falls not into that category for me. What annoys me are cars that trigger the alarms of 5 cars around my house. Cars made for the sole purpose of making that sound. Also annoying are car alarms running for 8h straight. Here in Chile the police wouldn't do anything about neither of those.

So how about a localized market for stopping noises? People could offer to stop noises for donations by various means and others could donate.

Sure, depending on the grade of anonymity of both parties the offers would also partially be of criminal nature. Another problem would be people taking their neighbors money to stop being noisy which they were just to earn money in the first place. So maybe people would start making pledges to donate to Greenpeace if that car looses its capacity to make noise to make sure they don't fall into this category.
