But if someone has control of your account, wouldn't they be able to do the same thing? Just find a post of yours with that address and use it to sign a message?

No one can sign a message using the bitcoin address you posted except you as you are the only one who have the private keys to it

Have figured it out now, I didn't realize t was a function you have to perform with your wallet
Yup.  Keep in mind that you can only sign a message with an address that you FULLY own.  So unless your wallet grgs compromised as well, you shouldn't worry.

When someone asks you to provide a signed message for an account, what does that mean?

Thanks
check this thread, you will know everythings: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/how-to-sign-a-message-990345

To clarify a bit; They are asking you to prove not only that you own that particular bitcoin address, but also prove ownership of the forum account you are posting from.
So what you need to do is find a bitcoin address you posted in some previous post, and then sign a message using the described method user above quoted posted in link.

That way, they will know you are the true owner of the account, which means;

-that the account wasnt hacked
-that if you give control over the account, no one can claim it later on under some excuse

This method is highly needed when dealing with forum account trading, and/or dealing with loans.
I see you were/are buying an account - don't accept/pay for an account where the seller can't/won't sign address from unedited older post made!

cheers

You prove ownership of the address they asked the signed message from. This way they know you have control over it.
