Thanks! I think I'll move away from multisig for the time being.

There seem to be single private keys associated with single addresses in the wallet, so I suppose exporting such a private key and creating another wallet with it could work?

Electrum shows only one private key but in reality you may have many private keys behind each address.

Multisig addresses are actually pay to script hash addresses (p2sh) where the address is a hash of a computer program written in bitcoin script. The program stipulates the conditions under which coins sent to the address can be spent. In the case of multisig addresses that's something like you can spend these coins if you prove possession of 2 out of the 3 private keys behind each address.

There is no standard for signing messages with p2sh addresses. So contact the site that is asking you to sign these messages and ask them for advise on what to do. Just don't reveal your private keys or seed to them Smiley

You could try solution from HCP https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/cannot-sing-messages-with-this-type-of-address-1989369 but if you ask me it is to complicated and probably not worth the time.Even if user succeed to sign message from multisig address there is problem with verification of such message. There is also problem with sign message with SegWit address, and this may be one of the reason why some people still refuse to use them.

Hi,

I am trying to sign a message with a multisig wallet. Is it possible? I can't figure out how - whenever I paste an address into the address field, I get the error that it is not the right kind of address (for example it does not have a unique private key).

Using Electrum 2.9.3 because there is no easy way for me to run the latest 3.05 offline.

Thanks!

Unfortunately there is no way(at least not some that I know) to sign message from Electrum 2FA wallet since there is 3 private keys and one is in possession of TrustedCoin. If you want to sign transaction you need legacy wallet/address which start with 1,and you can create one in existing Electrum wallet by using option File - New/Restore - Standard Wallet.
