I think the theory is people have figured out howto replace images on the site using sql injection of sorts.

At first it was just happening to the top sellers, but now its slowly happening to all the items... when it happens the seller has to re-list the item otherwise the postage options don't work.

But it's ok, Bitcoins aren't "real" money.

Hope this isn't the final straw for SR. Now that they are going to lose people's confidence since they're going to be the target of future hacks as well. Or at the very least very many attempts.

You're half right.

For a level 1 seller in BMR
Level 1 activation has a cost of 1 bitcoin, at least that sum has to be deposited to your account in order for you to be activated as seller.

For level 2, I don't think they charge.

[Edit]. Correction for both Level 1 and Level 2 seller account on BMR your account must first have a 1BTC deposit for an "activation fee".

Anyway, back on topic. Keeping the cost to entry high definitely filters out the scammers and would provide a better sense of security when purchasing a product. From what I've gathered by wandering the site, the vast majority of sellers have probably been in the game long enough to be able to afford an even higher entrance fee. If some kid with a plant in their closet is looking to get into the game, they'd just have to consider the cost of doing business.

BMR volume is miniscule and a very high percentage of the buyers are scammers relative to SR.

Digital goods can be relatively low risk though, as they're easily proven.

Not necessarily. If you're paying with either stolen Bitcoins or Bitcoins bought with stolen cards then the price isn't going to act as much of a deterrent to entry.

Stolen money is worth the same and the spender has to give up whatever else they could have bought just like people with earned money do.

I'd probably make seller accounts cheap. Sellers are what make the site useful, and they take most of the risk. If more revenue is needed, transaction fees would be a better place to get it.

But running a site like Silk Road is incredibly risky even with Tor, so they can charge whatever fees they want without having to worry too much about competition.
