Hey all,

I have been exploring bitcoin for a few months (and lurking here) a while.  On reddit, I started a grassroots effort to make it easier for people to quickly email and contact organizations that we would like to see accepting bitcoin.  Here is the spreadsheet:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ArZ3BWIAbHXndFdrdEc0VlhoODZYdlNGTFdZdEFJM1E&usp=sharing#gid=0

It's not 100% complete but the main thing is providing a quick way to contact the organizations.   If you do so, please be polite and stress the benefits of accepting bitcoin.  Don't simply say "ZOMG it has quintupled in value, accept it now!!!"  I think the best approach is a calm, rational approach.  If a competitor has begun accepting it (e.g. camwither.com), tell them that.  They will be more receptive to adopting it if someone else has first.

If any of you want me to add any, just pm me here, on reddit, or email at [email protected]

Thanks!!!

I checked out the huge, infamous Something Awful bitcoin thread and it struck me again that the most comfortable way SA goons (as they're called) can relate to anything is by taking the piss out of it. The purpose is comic gold first, truth second. That aspect of goon culture introduces a systemic bias against anything that is too new or different.

In the thread, I noticed people making major, obvious errors about Bitcoin and other things - errors that would be corrected in almost any other forum, especially the non-Bitcoin ones - yet no one corrected them. Again their primary purpose is to take the piss, and if a caricature is more funny to talk about they'll work with the caricature. They live and breathe on comic gold. Some of them even check these forums looking for gushing statements to poke fun at. It's actually kind of a nice reality check to temper the enthusiasm that can sometimes get out of hand here.

Therefore, I think SA will only support Bitcoin when it becomes funnier to make fun of Bitcoin's detractors, rather than just its supporters. Either that or when Lowtax figures out he can make money by offering premium memberships in bitcoin. Since reddit and 4chan - the closest thing SA has to siblings - already both accept it, it may be just a matter of time.

I skimmed the thread and didn't notice anyone suggesting SomethingAwful !?!

I would gladly pay for a membership using BTC just to rub those idiot's nose in it.  I'm sure I would get kicked out immediately for not towing the party line, but it would be loads of fun while it lasted.

I sent a question to [email protected] to see if they have ever considered accepting Bitcoins as donations.  Relatively speaking, SomaFM is probably a small target, but I figure any traction is good traction and their 'indie' status and approach may generate some interest.

Then again...maybe not.  We shall see.

I think bitconstore, if it starts to gain traction, can put pricing pressure on the Neweggs and Tigerdirects of this world.  Pricing pressure that they will only be able to relieve by also offering a discounted BTC payment option.

Market segments with low margins and cutthroat competition, where a 1% difference can make or break a sale, are prime candidates for a kind of "BTC domino effect" once a first vendor offers a BTC option.  Aside from electronics, rental cars, airlines, cruises, and hotels could be other examples of such segments ready to be bitcoined.

This!

We don't need to ask for amazon or ebay to trust bitcoin.. they won't. We need to show them competition, like our amazon killer ( bitcoinstore.com ) and our ebay killer ( bitmit.net ).

And then services like alibaba, dx, will follow...

Italy is unlikely to have the ability to shower the Vatican with cash and benefits much longer...

Like that would be a problem, ever... Still plenty of other places where to get their funding from.

I think it would be cool to get the Catholic Church!
The outgoing Pope sent out the first papal Tweet; maybe the new Pope will receive the first Vatican bitcoin?!
Oh trust me they don't need bitcoin. Italy gives them over a billion of euro each year, plus tons of benefits etcetcetc.
In the grand scheme, no one really needs bitcoin, but it would be cool to get the Holy Father's blessing or even condemnation of it...
The euro is likely to crash, and Italy is unlikely to have the ability to shower the Vatican with cash and benefits much longer...
I am sure the pope's bean counters know this. So, it would be interesting to hear the Vatican's view on Bitcoin.

Maybe if all the Catholics on this forum tweeted the hell out of them about it...
