yeah you can do that, together with the security phrase to recover it. There are a lot of ways actually to stay safe. Key is do it as much offline as you can

If you set up a virtuzal machine you set it up for solily that purpose. You can make one for each coin if you like that is the good thing about it. Also you can buy usb stick and encrypt them in linux. Very cheap way to be safe.

Edit: yes you can back them up on USB sticks. I will give you an example

Myetherwallet will let you save your wallet in different ways but what i do is just save the private key and the public key on my offline laptop. Then i save them on the encrypted usb sticks. Then i write the private keys down on paper together with the bookings. You should keep bookings on your investment because it can be a mess real fast!
Can you not just copy the whole wallet of each program to a UBS stick from your computer so then you have 2 copies of the same wallet? Or is the only way to only copy both the private & public keys to a USB stick?

I dedicated a laptop to generate keys offline and never go online with it. I have a dedicated laptop for my online wallets like myetherwallet. But a ledger nano should be able to fix those issues i think. I am just not sure how many alt coins are supported.

cold wallet is the right thing if you wanna store your coins offline ledger nano s trezor etc.

Hey  Smiley

What is a good way to store many different altcoins? My PC situation atm is not reliable. Got one laptop who overheats and turn off randomly and another one with failed USB ports etc. I dont expect it to live long. So having multiple wallets on either of the laptops dont sound like a good idea to me.
Dont like the idea of browser wallets.

My alternatives are:
- Use my current laptop. Can I just backup my wallets somehow and store it on my NAS?
- Buy a very cheap laptop with Windows 10/Linux and use it as a wallet. Only connected to the internet to transfer.
- Create a wallet VM. Got a ESXi server. Then backup the whole VM several places
- HW wallets? Is there reliable one who can hold all/almost all altcoins?
- Can I use ARM devices? RPi or Odroid. Reliable?

I find this wallet thingy to be very confusing. Up to now I just kept it all split across 4 exchanges. Reached 3600UD in value today I feel it is time to move it to a better long therm place
I just want to know first what kind of coin you are holding so we can have idea what wallet we were suggest to you. But much safer if you own the private key or seeds of every wallet of that coin.

Currently it is BTC, ETH, LTC, PAY, XMR, DASH, XCP, FCT, XRP among others I dont remember atm

I recommend using a raspberry pi 3. You could install a Linux OS. This would allow you to store the developers’ wallets that support Linux. This might be one of the cheapest solution.

i have them always synched in a virtual machine secured, with antivirus, and where i install only the altcoin, if i think that i'm going to installa another altcoin, which maybe is not safe, i create another virtual machine, and putting  altcoin in cold storage, is also not that good, because if the value increase a lot, you need to be ready to sell them

What's the differences between keeping a wallet on a virtual machine and on a normal Windows setup?

The best idea is for me to buy a cheap desktop where your coins are stored. Then use a cheap laptop as a watch-only wallet. Then you have a cold-storage, the saffest way on earth to store coins.

You can use this https://altpocket.io/?ref=2cz2FEItA9 as a watch only account. I know its a shameless referral link but you will love it. It is very well done and the dev just keeps working on this. You just give in the amount of alts you have and it automatically calculates your profits and percentage gains. Realy fond about that! I also have 2 encrypted usb sticks for backup btw. That is a must.

Watch only acc I use https://cointracking.info?ref=P100320 (shame shame, I know your name) for. This site can even use echange API's to automaticly update your portfolio if you pay premium

Here I live I can get new, cheap Celeron laptops for under 200USD. Maybe it is the safest/best bet? Software wallets on it and only turn on when accessing them? This is all long therm investments.
Lets say I go this route. Can I backup the wallets on USB sticks? Maybe buy 1 or 2 encrypted ones.

If you're a short term trader don't put your coins into only one exchange sites because we didn't if that site will get down or destroy by hackers and if you're coins is for long term try to use hard wallet or but trezor to store your btc and alts safely and check if th exchange site is legit or has a issues from their exchange site, So many hackers trying to hack exchange sites and try to put 2Factor authentication to your accounts for safe purposes.

I'm surprised at how many altcoins Ledger supports. I think it would be very useful for someone holding different cryptos.

I asked for a promo code on twitter but they didn't bite. They would do good marketing if they take advantage of the free bcc people have.

Write what down on paper? Is a wallet import/export just a line of random letters and numbers? Dont find it on any of the exchanges I use

Depends on what coin and there is the catch.

you need to do research on each coin how to store them on paper. (it is called cold storage)

So for instance bitcoin and litecoin you can use an offline wallet generator, for etherium you should go to www.myetherwallet.com

It will be some long days ahead for you i can assure you that :p but once it is done you will have a good peace of mind!

Clicked that link. It seem to create a long number/letter combo. Seem sketchy to rely on 3rd party websites as they might save the combo  Shocked

Is it considered safer than having a wallet(Open source?) on your PC only you control?

If you are a regular trader, split the coins on different exchanges, online wallets and soft wallets.
If you are to hold them for a very long time (or at least some of ti), write them down in paper (Print them).
