Maybe you misunderstood my opinion a little bit. I meant sometimes users Ignore boards (we should not discuss why they decide to ignore boards, it's personal choices), but days, weeks, or months later they see reports (from merit contest, merit challenges, merit giveaways) and have interests to find out those suggested topics/ posts on their Ignore Boards.
If they agreed with suggested topics/ posts, and want to send merits to qualifying ones, they have to unignore those boards. In fact, it is a easy step, but it's just a small adjustment, and if theymos can do that easily and with very little time, why not?
For example, if theymos pointed out a good post, and you clearly know that nearly whichever post theymos made, he usually receive bunches of merits. Then, after seeing theymos posts, you decide to visit original posts of others [actually in you Ignore board] that quoted by theymos, and find out that you can not send your merits to those posts if you don't unignore the board.
What’s the essence of ignoring the board and yet still looking into it?

Personally I think ignoring a board is too harsh. There are many good discussions in the economic board for example.

I think administrators shouldn't do anything like your suggestion because it may encourage more people to ignore boards and that's not helpful or healthy for the forum, imo.

Boards need moderation and users shouldn't have so many incentives to posts.
Totally agree with you.
I always see older members and even some merit sources say that such boards are on their ignore list, because the boards are full of shitposters and spammers but what have we done about it?

Ignoring a board isn't a solution to stopping shitposting or spamming but if we would grant incentives to merit worthy posts and replies this could encourage other users to make good post. Shitposters can also turn into good poster one day.
A good example is the Help and beginners board, despite even not having an active moderator currently, people now make good posts in there which wasn't the case in the past

You can just simply unignore the board and do give merit to those who you think are deserving. Less hassle i believe. Just try to ignore those topic that doesn’t affect your interest or report those thread if you think its irrelevant to the board.

I don't get is why some members put a whole board into ignore!
There are many boards that I never visited since I joined the forum (mainly local boards) and didn't have to ignore them. Am I missing something here!

For me since I'm accessing this forum from my mobile, it makes navigating the forum much easier. There was a time when I never visited the alternative subsection so I had all the section on ignore but now I have selected few boards especially hoard I don't find interesting on ignore.

About been able to merit posts in your ignore board, I think it'll go against the the main reason of such a feature as ignoring a board in the first place. If you find a post worth meriting you can just unignore the board for the main time and when you're done meriting you put back the board on ignore it's quite simple.

I may understand that in some cases you have to add a member to your ignore list, but what I don't get is why some members put a whole board into ignore!
It prevents those posts from showing up in individual users' post histories, as well as in places like Unread and Recent. This is obviously beneficial for boards which are in a language I don't speak or are complete spamfests (the Altcoin boards, for example) - I have no interest in having these posts clog up my feeds.

Well the forum has giving every user the opinion is either you ignore the board or you un-ignore the board I think that's very much fair.
If you can find a good post from a board you ignored this just goes to show you that you where to quick to conclude and hit the ignore button.
I am not a fan of ignoring a board no matter what is going on that board. It really doesn't help users that still put in there effort there. Rather than. Ignoring a board you can just limit the amount of time you enter there.

It does seem odd that one would even be reading posts in a section he's choosing to ignore.  It's like covering your eyes with your hands and then looking between the cracks in your fingers while complaining about the obstructed view.
Yeah, but this same thing just happened to me.  I viewed a thread that was linked to here, and I found several posts I wanted to merit and had to un-ignore the section before I could do so.  In fact, I made a comment about it right after meriting those posts:

What a pain in the ass--I visited the thread by clicking that link and found a few posts I wanted to merit, but when I went to merit the first one I get the message saying I am not able to merit that post (my words).  That's because I have Bitcoin Discussion on ignore, so I had to temporarily un-ignore that section in order to send merits in that thread.  I'm not saying this is a huge problem, but it is annoying.  It would be nice if you could merit posts in sections you have on ignore without having to jump through hoops.

It'd be great if Theymos could fix this.  It's definitely not a major issue, but as I said it's kind of a pain in the butt.

Why should it allow since you have ignore that board? Un-ignore isn't better solution? What does mean ignore if still you can use that board? Its look like you want to ignore someone and at the same time you want to read his/her post. Not is it?

Its look like you want to ignore someone and at the same time you want to read his/her post. Not is it? You have right to ignore any board. And I don't think there is any limitation for ignore & un-ignore. So you are free to do it anytime.

However, I don't think this is a big deal and you can solve easily by yourself. By the way, how are you reading post if you have ignore board? I have no experience since I didn't ignore any board. But yes, I use avoid.

Maybe it is unnecessary most of times, but in some special cases, I actually have need to send merits to good posts, in my Ignore boards.
Of course, I can simply un-ignore such boards, and can be able to send merits to posts in those boards.
However, I think that the forum should allow users to send merits to their Ignore boards, because it will save time and more convenient for users.
It sounds ridiculous to have interests to send merits to posts in Ignore boards, but sometimes, we might see reports to good posts that deserve merits, and jump into those posts to read. Eventually, we satisfy with reported posts, and want to merit them. Having feature to allow directly sending merits to posts in Ignore boards make sense.

For example:
My Ignore Board (Economics)

Good post in Economics board

Unable to send merits to that post in Economics board

Any ideas on solution?
