This kind of speculation is impractial, way too impractical. Greece did abandon euros but adopting bitcoin is a different thing.People need to look at things with more pragmatic approach . They can't just sit back and make the assumptions. Things look easy when said ,but they're not.Trust me , they are not. Not is Greece case though.

Many citizens are already switching to Bitcoin meaning they price should go up. We've seen a bit of a spike averaging 20-30 USD which I see is a result of Greece and its failing economy. I predict the price of BTC should make a sharp increase as days go on (or as Greece and other EU nations start to cripple financially).

The positive spike is a result of the media attention bitcoin is sharing, very very few Greeks are using bitcoin, so few itself know about the existence of bitcoin. Considering their economy also does not support the infrastructure to use bitcoin, there is no way that Greece and Bitcoin could synchronize to work together atleast for a couple of years. Sorry for busting a couple bubbles here, but let's keep it real

The biggest problem with this scenario really is the fact that they would have to *buy* the BTC that are supposed to go into circulation. You can't just go and issue imaginary BTC created out of thin air, you know...

Last week banks needed to open to serve thousands of pensioners who don't have debit cards and don't know how to use an ATM.  How do you think people like this will go with concepts such as 'blockchain', 'mining', 'where does a bitcoin  come from?'

The adoption of bitcoin will be a gradual process, just like any technology. The fact that Granny doesn't use ATMs or debit cards doesn't mean the country's not ready for ATMs or debit cards. Likewise for bitcoin: you'll have early adopters, mid adopters, late adopters, and never-adopters. It will be a parallel currency (not the ONLY currency) so it's OK that not everyone will use it.

Yes, bitcoin should never aim to be a monopoly on money, it should be freely competing with other forms of money, in open fair and free way. Last thing we want is governments forcing us to use bitcoin, it would be an unmitigated disaster. People will resist going completely electronic especially if it is forced on them, including some bitcoin diehards like me. There will always be room for the oldest forms of money, such as physical silver coins which are extremely depressed in value right now but one day may also roam free to find fair value as money.

this is just a dream by bitcoin users wishing to see the moon. i doubt that i can happen.
bitcoin is in its early stages and not still ready to be mass adopted. besides the government will not allow such thing because they can not control it and they are always better off printing their money .
on the other hand people are not ready and knowledgeable enough to accept bitcoin as their currency and for their day to day usage. there is a lot of old people who are confused to even use an ATM , let alone using bitcoin or a computer for that matter.

Yes, neither bitcoin is prepared for such a mass adoption nor is any other country to adopt it just yet. To have such an economic evolution, there should be massive changes at all of the different perspectives of the country's economy. It is not so easy for a whole country to go digital and adopt a crypto currency. It takes time, let's think less about profit but more about the bitcoin culture Smiley

Greece needs large amounts of fiat currency right now.  They need millions of new pieces of paper for people to trade with each other.  Bitcoin is obviously not the answer.

i dont think greece will be able to adopt bitcoin as main currency. there are lot of people in greece who dont have any idea about bitcoin.
it is not possible for every citizen of Greece to adopt bitcoin as their new currency because of lack of knowledge the technology and mostly old people have trust issues using crypto.

Greek Island to Trial Gold-Backed Digital Currency Alternative to the Euro

It's happening, the Greeks are turning to cryptos for real now. It's only a matter of time until they adopt Bitcoin.

Greece abandons the euro and adopts bitcoin - a lovely idea which would at least guarantee citizens could no longer be subject to summary devaluation at the knee. Alas only slightly more plausible than lenders accepting a No vote is a basis for debt relief.

Seeing this in RT is definitely bullish for bitcoin since it somehow reflects the Russian agenda. Also, it's positive marketing for bitcoin and shows where it could be used. If Greece adopts bitcoin then the price of bitcoin would definitely rise to 5000$ per bitcoin.

I think Greece will never adopt bitcoin ....  Roll Eyes

The greek government have no money, how would they source the BTC for the change over.

Much cheaper and easier when you can just print your own currency.
Leaving Euro and going back to drachmas? That would be something! Their currency was one of the oldest in the world, so much history left behind...

thye will not adopt anything that they cannot control, they cannot certainly risk another time to be banckrupt, in the case bitcoin fall by a good portion

they will play a more conservative game now, if they really want a cryptocoin i think it's better for them to create their own and get rid of their dracma, or maybe call it dracmacoin....

Well, i also think that bitcoin for greeks is not such a hot idea since they either already have cash or money is in the bank, which only allows them to withdraw euro 50/day right now.

However, this is hot news:

Financial Times (very respectable) reporting that "Greek banks prepare plan to raid deposits to avert collapse"-example is given as 30% haircut on above euro 8000 deposit.

It is a good idea, and there is lots of talking about it but I think now it might be a bit late for mass adoption in Greece, it is quite funny that there is only one ATM in the whole of Greece so I read Smiley

It's a lovely thought (for us Wink) but I'm afraid I can't see anything like this happening for a long time. BTC may well go to the moon & gain mass adoption but I doubt a country will ever use it as their national currency. Not in my lifetime any way.

Like others have said it's just too early in BTC's lifespan to be used as a national currency, people just aren't ready for it plus the Greek government would shit themselves at the thought of not being able to be in 100% control.
