Imo, people winning in wager races are those that would wager such amounts anyway, with or with a contest. I think for anyone ending up in the top 5,000 positions, the prize is just a nice bonus, that is much lower than what they won/lost along the way. That is my impression. I myself have never won a wagering contest, except on newly opened sites with very small number of participants. And in this particular race, after $38 wagered,

It is never really a smart idea to wager a lot just to receive a prize in wagering contests; in the end you will probably have lost more than the prize you would win. The amount you need to wager on Stake to finish in the top 5000 is just crazy high and I think, the amount of money people are wagering, must be the highest in the industry.
It is not necessarily so. Of course, some high rollers are in profit form their game, I think a bit less than half of them really. But you never know in which party you are going to be in the end, so if you can't afford to lose tens of thousands of USD, I wouldn't recommend trying to win a wagering contest on a large gambling platform with many of high rollers. It's another story if you are high roller anyway, as I said above.
