There is still a lot of no-steam cracked servers and clients available. And I still play CS 1.6 including various Zombie Modes! Zombie mode is my favorite as it is more play time than spectating.

I have many fond memories of playing CS pre-Steam, being in on the inception and development of Network 42 which later became Tactical Gamer.  Played with some pretty heavy hitters and cyber athletes of the time as well as many very cool people.  I'll remember the tune playing in the T's house on cs_rio (my favorite map) for the rest of my life.  Steam was the beginning of the end of my gaming but a great business model.

Oh yeah, that was the original.  This deemed a problem for many servers where players didn't want to be left in the dark, maybe it was that the flashlight stopped working, so most disabled that feature.

Fun times though man.  I've had dreams that I was in a CS:S surf server, or something lol

i watched some vids on youtube, its basically the same, only on 1,6, you played the maps in almost complete darkness, you only had your flashlight. the zombies had nightvision, more fun Smiley

I play Wii, but my kids just became 2 and 4, and PES online aswell as Mario Kart online. Would steam pose a threat to that?

Most likely not, unless Nintendo went out of business. (Highly unlikely). The servers would stay up unless they, well, didn't.

I am alright with steam, I certainly see the beginnings of something evil but most of us here are loyal windows users and we *know* how bad things can get.  Bring it on!  I use steam rarely but the portability of the games is a cool concept.

Not a big fan of steam per se but it's not bad for picking up budget games and some of the sales are pretty awesome. Plus when my old (199x) half-life disk wouldn't install under Windows 7, I put the CD key in Steam and it installed right off and gave me a bunch of others in the series for free as well.

It's a dream compared to that Windows live crap that installs as well. That never remembers my account details so it's password resets etc.

I don't see Steam going console as all of the console makers are too up their own rear ends with walled gardens, DRM and total nazi-like control of their systems. Unless Steam plans to build their own console. But unless you can plug a keyboard and mouse into it, I'm not interested (and wouldn't be even then).

Meh, I don't hate it. If I do, I'll be sure to concede defeat, but for now, I'm just gonna keep on using it Tongue

Steam is not just DRM, it is a monopoly, I've actually gvien up using Steam entirely and put it on my boycott list like Origin etc. and I don't regret it one bit. It seems like a great idea until you start having problems, then you'll start hating it like the rest of us, you don't own games anymore you just rent them for the full price which in my opinion is fucking outrageous.
