I was a bit rushed, so hopefully there aren't major mistakes:

https://steemit.com/steemit/@anonymint/improving-steem-s-rankings-to-cater-to-diverse-content-preferences

I really didn't spend any time thinking about game theory attacks on this. I'll be thinking now and possibly editing it.

Editing for errors or clarity is good (be aware that editing after payout is currently disabled), but I would suggest that follow-on topics like game theory attacks be new posts. That not only will likely earn you more but it is more friendly to the reader who doesn't need to go back to already-read posts and read edits.

When does payout occur? Do I have to elect it?

I agree. I am just following up to comments, such as yours I just replied to:

https://steemit.com/steemit/@anonymint/improving-steem-s-rankings-to-cater-to-diverse-content-preferences#@anonymint/re-smooth-re-anonymint-improving-steem-s-rankings-to-cater-to-diverse-content-preferences-20160717t232018335z

And yes follow on blog posts, because I also have I think something important for stickiness. But I am already too sleepy to write it up today.

Again long-term funding model remains the insoluble concern but I will be open minded when I set my time to really think deeply about it and try to paradigm shift my perspective on it. Maybe I will realize something.

P.S. if you reply to my comment, I'll earn probably have my first very high paying comment. Your comment got $357 because your rep power is so high.

if you post an article praising monero, and then your comrades which btw also  "fellow (of) think-a-likes"  all voting your article, i think thats fit the definition of circlejerk, no Huh

Please wait for my blog post.

I am proposing an algorithm so their Monero content gets highly ranked only for those who like Monero content.

I am about half-way through composing the blog post. It is easy to visualize in my head, but much more difficult to explain it in a way that most people will understand.

Let me know what you think.

The way the ranking currently works on Steem then if one of the whales such as smooth doesn't upvote this, then others won't follow to upvote in large numbers to make my reward consumerate with my time investment. I expended more than 8 hours of my time on this. I would hope smooth will upvote it.

Not sure if it's smooth, but someone liked it!

Ned Scott the CEO of Steemit. He has double the STEEM POWER of smooth and @dantheman.

He invited me to call him to talk about my block chain improvements. So that is one of the aspects that inspired me to blog about any improvements I could think of for Steem. I wasn't sure if he would upvote me because I decided not to speak to him unless I could come up some valid improvement.

I am still not convinced the funding model will work, but will do some more thinking about it, maybe blog any ideas I can think of.

I'd like to get the ranking model improved so it doesn't reflect badly on block chain and crypto currency. If this fails, I want it to fail because of funding model, not because of things we could fix. And that will provide more time to think out the funding model.

I will also probably make another blog about increasing stickiness of the site near-term.

I didn't really feel like going through all of the comments before, but there is something already like this that doesn't pay you "on the blockchain".. rather they just pay you money or (I think) bitcoins as well...

Anyone here ever heard of tsu? ... it's a lot older than steemit I think, and does what I think steemit is proposing... just not with the unnecessary blockchain bloat.

Plus people are sheep, if everyone is using facebook and twitter, your going to need a big time sheep dog to move all of those people over to steemit or tsu.

I joined Steemit the very first day. I've used it a bit and checked back occassionally since. There are plenty of flaws with Steemit that goes beyond the obvious pumpNdump/pyramid/inflation/whatever you want to call it economic problems.

The problem with a platform like Steemit is it caters to the okayest and the most, not the best. What I mean by this is the way the voting/payment system works, everyone is looking for the most "good" content to upvote, because others will upvote it as well. Tits and walls of text are dominating trending day in and day out. You can read these posts, and many of them are riddled with errors and generally average quality. Why? Because everyone involved is there to make a profit (look at the dozens of monetization guides that get voted to the top). It's not about having something new, thought provoking, or different, it's about circlejerking anything and everything that the community can agree is worthy of votes.

The result is a feedback loop and a subsequent echochamber of the same recycled garbage over and over again under new names. Steemit claims to seek to provide a curated news source. That isn't going to happen because the only things getting votes will be in line with the community's opinions. FFS, look at how every other god damn post is an introduceyourself post. There is no value in this platform other than getting rich off of the efforts of others. It's a top heavy ecosystem and everyone disillusioned with the thought that they can make money are lining the pockets of the dev team and the top posters/botters.

I should have realized that because the more high reputation votes on a post that one votes on, the more curation reward they receive. Thanks. That is the most astute post I've read. Thus as you say, it becomes all about the game and not some other quality of the content, thus the content will become dysfunctional w.r.t. (unrelated) to any criteria other than the game.

And this result will apply to their plans for Peertracks also. It won't be about the quality or social diverse matching of the music. It will be about driving pumps to shares.

I'm surprised more people haven't already mentioned this. It's already a huge problem with twitter (feeds are universally cluttered by garbage "parody" accounts that just repost the same tweets and videos, regardless of if you follow any of them or not). With a site that rewards users for voting with the majority and hurts them for voting incorrectly, this problem will only be amplified. Even already the content on steemit is incredibly monotone. The trending page can be summed up as guides, "steemit is my lord and savior" circlerjerks, and introduction posts. Sometimes you get crypto personalities who make posts as well, but that's rarer.

Well, this has turned into quite the anti-Steem circle jerk. It is clear some of you have not read the white paper, as you are wrong/confused about several things. Yet, I have wasted enough time with trolls already. I am certain there are at least a couple sock puppets posting here too. It us funny that as soon as Steem shot up coin market cap all the other bag holders feel the need to tear it down to prop up whatever they are bag holding. Very sad indeed.

I'm not a paid shill, sockpuppet, or troll. I have read the Steem whitepaper and came to the conclusion that the whole project is a pile of steaming horseshit. Can you explain to me why my concerns with the system that I have quoted above are incorrect? Thanks.

People don't need to know how much money others are earning. Do they?

i really like your idea, i think it would be a good way to stop the nosense posts with huge incoming.
but, i do think people want others to know how much they are earning... it's some form to be known as a "specialist" or any other nome they want to be called.

still good idea tho.

If your post is number 1 in the list, that automatically means you're earning good money. If someone has 1 million likes on youtube, you already know he is making good money.

You see what I mean?

Lets say you can see who is making most money on Youtube right next to their video as it gets posted. Chances are people are going to keep copying whichever video is making most money (they already do this! but it would get 10x worse if they could see the money).

Content copying isn't something new but why make it worse?

I don't think anybody should care whether people see how much money they're making (it just puts your account at risk).

Also, hackers are more likely to attack a website whose users earning is publicly visible on the website. I'm quite sure that's the main reason steemit is keep getting hacked.

Integrating a small thumb photo or a larger one, would be good for visibility purposes. Non-photo articles are buried kind'a fast.

Is there some way to make a thumbnail appear on the single line listings?

I think if you embed an image inside the post, anywhere, it will appear alongside the post when people browse it in the main index.
