Interesting research coming out of Uni of Cambridge.  Can bitcoins be tracked? ... used to have issues with tainting the bitcoins but current technology has lead to practical ways to trace stolen bitcoins.  im not sure what this means for you and me, like what happens if somehow stolen bitcoins land in my hands... but interesting nonetheless.

Bitcoin can be traced. It's not anonymous, everything is public.

This is not really anything new since people have been doing blockchain analysis and tracing bitcoin ever since bitcoin was used to actually trade stuff over the internet. It's hard, but with the right tools, you can definitely do it.

There is nothing you can do if "stolen" bitcoins lands in your hands, you probably won't tell and at least for now, nobody will care. It doesn't make you any less trustworthy since you're not deliberately trying to receive stolen bitcoins.

People can be found if they buy from a webshop and pay with bitcoin and gives out their shipping address (because somehow they need to receive the item they have paid for). But that address can only be questioned by authorities, not by induviduals, so it's not a real help in the end...

People have been ordering stuff to fake addresses, it's a game of cat and mouse. It won't change because some guy has decided that coins that go from one address to another are tainting the second address. Assuming that the target address always belongs to the sender or that the receiver will know who the sender was is naive at the very least.
To trace the origin of coins that went from an address A to address D through B and C will work only if you can actually contact the owners of all these addresses. So you trace D, ask who C is and so on. What if you have 200 middlemen along the way, located all around the world, and not all of their identities are public?

Since absolutely all transactions are recorded in blockchein and this information is publicly available, we can trace to which purse address our stolen coins are transferred. Also in most cases, the information about the contents of the wallet is also open, that is, what coins are there and their number. Then you can track further where these coins were transferred and all this information is again tracked. If the country's crypto currency is legalized, one can turn to law enforcement agencies and since theft in all countries is a crime, these bodies can use their wider powers to track the movement of stolen coins. If, in the end, the thief brings stolen coins to the stock exchange or exchanger and there he will be identified for the tax authorities, or for another purpose, the law enforcement agencies will very quickly be able to establish the identity of the criminal. In the future, this is exactly how it will be, even if the coins become more confidential and anonymous. For law enforcement agencies, this will not be an obstacle, since to their requests, any institution or organization of any form of property is required to provide answers to the substance of the information requested.

at a minimum, it will force regulations to make people produce their identity in order for them to change bitcoins into dollars etc.

It's already happening, but first of all you can always exchange for cash, like people are doing on localbitcoins, or you can not exchange at all. At least that's what we are hoping for. That the economy will allow us to use coins directly, just like we can do in some online stores right now, but this time it won't be online. You will be able to anonymously walk into a store and pay with your phone or hardware wallet. I wonder how they're going to trace that.

It's nothing new, Chain Analysis has existed for quite a while now. You have to be careful with whom you deal with. Scammers most likely will move on to using anonymous Altcoins.

Yes you can traced your stolen Bitcoin. But, if you want to take back, that not happen and you can only look it. If you want it back, for that you need to know thief's private key who stole your Bitcoin.

It's great if the stolen bitcoin can be traced. But there is a problem.
In order to track the person who has received the bitcoin, the address owner must be known. And it's the opposite of the purpose of the creation of bitcoin. However governments don't want bitcoin addresses owners to be unknown and they are struggling to regulate bitcoin in a way which bitcoin owners can be tracked.
It's trackable, yes. But that traceability won't help you when you can see that the bitcoins move from one address to another one, because not all of the addresses can be linked to people directly. People can be found if they buy from a webshop and pay with bitcoin and gives out their shipping address (because somehow they need to receive the item they have paid for). But that address can only be questioned by authorities, not by induviduals, so it's not a real help in the end...

If the theft is not good, yes. But if one sends the stolen Bitcoin through multiple mixers, and exchanges the coins to some anonymous coins and exchange it back then it is impossible to trace the stolen Bitcoins. Recent thefs have shown that is impossible to trace altcoins if the theft knows what he does (e.g. XEM theft).

Yes, the stolen COINS we can check it by transfer wallet address transfer to which account, but because these accounts are anonymous, we cannot to recover our COINS, so when we know the stolen COINS in which account is not of great help for us

Yes, you really can track the stolen bitcoin you have, but I'll tell you right away, you stole it from your stupidity and naivety)
You can not store passwords and purse data on a PC, buy a USB flash drive, and the thickness of the tracking?
After all, all the wallets are not personal)
