This is malkhamb, one of the traditional Indian sport in which gymnasts perform feats and poses in concert with a vertical wooden pole or rope.
Very less known, but very interesting and difficult to perform.

I had a weird idea: the artist could play with the lighting so that interesting shadows would form when the viewer stands in front of the wall.

Not exactly what you thought of, but there is always Shadow Art (http://graphics.stanford.edu/~niloy/research/shadowArt/shadowArt_sigA_09.html).
